  1. Admin clearly asked about how skill can matter more once the battle is already joined. The hypothetical situation was 1 v 3. Of course, maybe everyone is off topic because people don't have many viable ideas. I certainly don't. Probably the only answer would be to make the game really arcade (stamina bars powering WoW spells and heals) or really harsh and sim-level (requiring excellent planning and energy management to pull off well-timed broadsides while maneuvering hard) with RPG elements in the crew (huge rate of fire and morale disparities). The first two elements are obviously off the table. The third could only work in an essentially SP game with limited pop-in PvP like Dark Souls.
  2. Why would you ever expect the (second?) most popular nation (and pirates are just a nation) to be limited and defeated by the others?
  3. Faster is always better, AFAIK. Certainly it would be in real life.
  4. Gaming laptops have numpads. I have suffered from lack of numpad myself and it stinks, but it wouldn't be a real problem here. Just allow alternate bindings of Control-9 = Num 9
  5. This is just wrong. Mercantilism. It's the exact opposite of what you're talking about. American public schools teach kids almost nothing about history, but even they included this little detail. Every single Spanish ship bringing goods from America had to enter Europe at one particular port, many miles up a river.
  6. There's not much in the way of social infrastructure in the game at this stage. I'm sure once NA goes gold, there will be in-game pop-ups informing players of discipline. But we're still in alpha. When the colonists have just landed in the wilderness, there's martial law for a little while.
  7. No one ever replaced a 12-pdr long gun with a 12-pdr carronade. They mounted a 32-pdr carronade. At near muzzle velocity, that will penetrate just fine.
  8. How on earth does this respect history? If this was possible in history, no colonial wars would ever have been fought between European powers.
  9. You're ignorant and have nothing to say. Go away.
  10. Did anyone else read this and think of a hermaphrodite brig? *hides*
  11. They both have 9-pounders, but Niagara has three fewer per side, and dramatically fewer hitpoints than even a Merc. Cerberus is still a frigate, which even Rattlesnake won't be.
  12. Soon we'll get Rattlesnake, which is the new small ship (three masts).
  13. There should be gameplay videos of every ship on YouTube if you look around a bit.
  14. Apparently it's not a quick or simple feature, but it's under advisement. If it were up to me: Numpad 5: Maint'gallant mast head panorama view Numpad 2: Helmsman. quarterdeck or poop deck view, depending on vessel Numpad 8: Fore fighting top view Make the bow chaser use a perspective from the forecastle and suddenly we don't need the current floating viewpoint anymore, except for a vanity camera. This will be more immersive and mean that we spend more time on the deck of ships, instead of looking through or around them.
  15. Hmmn... Very taught standing rigging can get in the way of yard traverse, and make it difficult to sail upwind.
  16. Press Home to access free camera. Keep pressing it until your camera follows the position of your ship as it sails along, while still allowing WASD control of the camera. It's a feature that will probably go away at some point.
  17. Chases are way too easy when you get instant feedback on who's catching up or not. Removes all the suspense of your decisions. FYI in the current build you can use the vessel-stabilized Home camera to get the same information, however.
  18. Using numpad to switch into gunnery views (chasers, especially) seems like a no-brainer to me. And the transition could be instant with this method.
  19. Time for snow-snow. (For those of you who know how it's pronounced.)
  20. Officers, pirate gameplay and econ buildings are all critical to future game balance. HOWEVER, the lack of land and shallows in port battles will garner NA dangerous amounts of bad press in EA. This is a very important first impression. I don't care how crude the land is graphically, it just has to be there.
  21. Simple solution: spawn pirate players in the Bahamas where they belong. The MT, Baracoa, Tortuga triangle will always be brutal, and AI rat Santis would be ludicrous.
  22. That's my dream too, Vulgarian. We really need to find us a coder. I bet it's not even hard to do, if you leave out the custom GUI.
  23. Problem is, surviving a storm means doing the same thing for eight or twelve or thirty-six hours. You'd have to have scripted events like man overboard, things breaking, wind shifts, etc. The core gameplay would just be fighting with the rudder to stay on course.
  24. Creative Assembly has spent well over 10 years maturing their engine to handle pathing, AI and rendering for hundreds of 3D troops. To my knowledge the Unity engine has never been put to comparable purposes.
