  1. Definitely not. This is precisely the sort of time where fog of war and unpredictability should be the rule of the day. For many reasons, including excitement and prevention of ganking.
  2. This won't happen. Not unless we all support NA in its balanced 'fun realism' concept. Then after it wins all the Indie Game of the Year awards we come back and ask for mod tools with dedicated server support.
  3. I'm totally against noobifying the OW sailing any further. If the devs think there is a problem, then here is an idea: If you are within a few miles of a port and not moving, you can press a 'Wait for Tide' button. Your screen fades to black for a moment, and then you get a 5-knot boost to dead upwind speed.
  4. Wind is a global server setting. If it gets us locally variable wind I will support any carebear convenience proposal.
  5. You answered your own question there. It's the only aspect of sailing represented in the OW. Take that away and you have nothing. Also, otherwise none of you lazy buggers will learn to tack.
  6. As I understand it, fog in the Caribbean is actually more likely to form offshore and roll into land like a cloud. The islands and coasts themselves aren't particularly known for regular fogs.
  7. The OP should change his name to Tailwind.
  8. Seriously, the only time I see arena events happening is when admin shows up with his yellow-colored announcement chats.
  9. So if you'd rather spend your time differently, maybe go to another port?
  10. I think we have a pretty good balance now. There are always enough NPCs in the more populated areas, and players should have incentive to cluster together.
  11. A lot of Cuba and Hispaniola should also have hardwoods and pines, although this definitely isn't my subject.
  12. Heyhey! I've recovered to the middle of the second (slower) pack, after starting off pretty much dead last.
  13. You can already select shot type instantly during the battle timer phase.
  14. You've all seen how common storms are in the OW. How often have you fought a battle while in that radius?
  15. I thought I would hate it, but to be honest the HK system feels less stifling than what we had before. Why? Because the worst kind of grind is the straight grind. When all that matters is XP, and there is only one way to get it, freedom in pursuit of that goal is a terrible thing. Because left to my own devices, I will try to end the grind ASAP, choosing the most efficient vessel and most efficient tactics for the task. In my desire to grin faster, I doom myself to repeating the same kinds of encounters ad nauseum. Any complicating, limiting factor makes the experience less of a straight grind. It adds texture, and guarantees a small change in scenery every 10 NPCs down. Obviously, I would rather see more fleshed-out conditions or quests shaping the grind, but this may just be better than nothing.
  16. Admin says this is fixed.
  17. I almost never stay out longer than 10 days in normal gameplay. Looking for fights means bouncing from port to port along the coast. Only trading and exploration voyages take longer than that. And pretty much every warship could store three months of fresh water, with at least another month of food. Also, essential ship's stores are salted meat, bread and rum. Not expensive or difficult-to-produce items by any means. Everyone in the game will just press the Buy Stores button and everyone will get the bonus. Unless you want a silly option to feed the foremast jacks filet mignon, in which case it is just extorting powergaming players for an unfair advantage in PvP.
  18. Without Transatlantic voyages there's not much point simulating provisions. It might be worth levying a steep upkeep charge on higher-level ships, though. Or better yet mandated downtime, which would make societies think twice about how often they take out the full garage of Santis. Likewise, it provides a realistic drawback to certain high-performance ships like the Pavel, whose hull was more prone to wearing out than a stouter Bellona. Skipping your downtime for maintenance and upkeep would result in performance penalties, which would only kick in at lower durabilities. At some point a hardcore PvP captain would be better off selling his degraded vessel at bargain prices to someone less demanding.
  19. The most impressive technical achievement of the game so far? I guess that clarifies your preferences for me then.
  20. As we've already pointed out, my proposal would be far less disruptive and aggravating than the current implementation. And yet I haven't heard of any computers being defenestrated during the present alpha. On the contrary, storms create excitement and awe in Global chat. Do you also want to remove the storm instances from the game? What is the gameplay payout for the aggravation there? This is a sailing game. Removing weather from a sailing game is like removing reloads and grenades from an FPS. Now, finally, to answer your question, there is a big gameplay payoff. Storms are a dramatic deus ex machina that radically alter campaigns. They will scatter an invasion fleet before it reaches the port battle. Storms break blockades of contested ports. They will turn a ho-hum crafting run into a perilous adventure, with high stakes and unpredictable outcomes. Storms turn the OW meta upside down. SoLs become the fastest, most maneuverable vessels in an instant. They are kings for a day, and the frigate gank squads lose their lunch. Brig captains bear down on the Lynxes that were so smug a few moments before.
  21. I think he just wants them to be more logical. The mods we how now are called Speed Trim and Copper Plating. But they have nothing to do with either of those things. From the sound of it, speed mods may be at a good place stat-wise finally. But I would still rather have them apply to one point of sail primarily, with tiny bonuses for the others. How were you planning on preventing port battles from becoming all Santi, all the time? I bet he's using a pre-patch speed mod or something. Are you saying that prices should be jacked up artificially? (Historically a sloop-of-war cost about 25% as much as an SoL, IIRC) Lineship bundles? Edit: Actually masts could be the equivalent of lineship bundles. Not many places in the Caribbean with three-foot diameter trees.
  22. Connie shouldn't be a generalist ship, and shouldn't be part of the standard lineup. That's the whole point. Connie murders balance, and should therefore be treated as end of the line.
  23. Barring variable wind speeds. But apparently we're not getting those because players will be confused.
  24. You can't just straight-up ASK someone how much they're willing to be haggled down, lol.
