In which case it's rather hard to critique the performance, except from a balance perspective. I'm really suspicious of claims that grape is the be-all, end-all weapon right now. It seems like most of the playerbase is happily going about its cannonball-shooting business, while only a few people are up in arms about OP yardarm-to-yardarm grape broadsides. Can we see some good videos of this tactic in action? Because I'm inclined to believe that there only a few grapeshot masters out there, and that they've left some traumatized victims in their wake. When most mere mortals try to use grape, they end up wasting the whole broadside. We didn't see any 'grapeshot-vs-intact-hull' behavior in the tournament, did we? And that's an excellent acid test for effective tactics.

IRL grape will penetrate the thin topside barricades of most ships, unless the bulwarks there are very thick, as with Constitution and Niagara. Light vessels like the Rattlesnake (whose gundeck bulwarks are only 4' high in any case) would probably be penetrated by grape of a decent caliber all over.

The answer should have been: The boats are stored in the waist when not in use, with the interior frames and thwarts removed, stored inside one another like matryoshki. Boat davits are just for ease of launching, and not used in bad weather or battle. It was desirable to tow them or pass them off to consorts in battle, but when not possible they would stored in the waist. They wouldn't tow boats if speed was important.

Manually Select Sails
maturin replied to theTopsail's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
But the example only applies to the likes or Lync or Pickle (maybe the brigs). The game's full-rigged ships would keep all their square canvas lying when sailing upwind, and only use staysails on a case-by-case basis.- 12 replies

Including ship's boats on the models would require a huge amount of research in order to get them right, not to mention the man-hours in modelling the hulls themselves. And for something that would pretty much be restricted to OW eye-candy.

Manually Select Sails
maturin replied to theTopsail's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Topsail schooners like Lynx can generally brace their square topsail up sharp enough so that it is useful on a close-hauled course. For square riggers, square sails are rarely furled in favor of fore-and-aft canvas.- 12 replies

Is that the full bracket? I thought there were more teams than that. Or did SORRY just drop out? -
Ship to Ship Musketry Simulation

Grape is grape and doubleshot is doubleshot. NA does not include such ammo types as canister/case shot, bar shot, star shot, langridge, stone shot, heated shot, exploding shot, etc. -
Move PvP1 to a server more playable by Australians
maturin replied to Bach's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Most of PvP 1 has ping like that, and no one complains. There are people who throw a fit every time their FPS dips below 60, because they 'deserve' it. -

Still technically unfair for people at the equator or at high elevations. Complaining would only decrease a little. -

I recommend combining your three images to a single-file collage and replacing two of the links with text. -
Ship to Ship Musketry Simulation
maturin replied to Wesreidau's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
The book is literally titled 'miscellany.' In other words, the author is guaranteed not to be an expert in the vast majority of subjects he's writing about. Slips of the pen in non-definitive texts that conflict with common knowledge do not need to be exhaustively refuted. As with shrapnel vs. fragmentation, grape and canister/case shot are quite different things, but many people don't particularly care. In a non-technical context, confusing these terms is not a grave offense. -

So you base your reasoning on Wikipedia and sloppy nomenclature from an uncited secondary source? The distinction between (naval) grapeshot and canister is not up for debate. -

Really? Most of my cannons are reloaded by phantoms. They don't traverse, change elevation or recoil, but people are used to it. Maybe visible swivel gun models would provide the mental link. -

I think that puffs of smoke from the fighting tops would be plenty, in terms of visualization. Especially if the models were adjusted to display the canvas screens that should be providing concealment up there. -
Ship to Ship Musketry Simulation
maturin replied to Wesreidau's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
And in ordinary situations neither ship has any chance of boarding the other. When two ships in NA both have a decent amount of momentum and undamaged sailing, boarding is unlikely to take place in NA. And any other sharpshooters stationed in the fighting tops. There were often swivels or even small howitzers mounted up there. How it a man with a musket supposed to hit anything on the deck of a lineship thirty feet above his head? Only level and plunging fire is possible for musketmen. Firepower would be assessed based on the ship's fighting tops, (cutters have none), and the rest according to the marine complement. Luckily the game already tracks the relative heights of ships for boarding purposes, so a cutter would be largely helpless to harm a large ship using small arms. On the other hand, the currently-helpless SoL could force a stern-camping cutter to keep its distance. -
Ship to Ship Musketry Simulation
maturin replied to Wesreidau's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Hodo, have you ever read anything about naval combat ever? Musketry was extremely dangerous and effective in ship-to-ship actions, and not just in calm seas. You mention distance twice in your post, so I don't see what prevented you from reaching a conclusion that isn't pure nonsense... Sharpshooters and marines only came into play at very short ranges, for the reasons you mentioned. Now, guess where most single-ship actions were decided? And even if in-game musketry were restricted to 25 yards, it would still be quite useful in certain situations, such as large ships being stern-camped by light vessels. If you don't want it in-game, that's fine, but kindly refrain from spreading historical misinformation. -

Funny you should mention Trafalgar, since many of the French and Spanish ships had enormous proportions of regular infantry on board. Of course, this was desperation, not an advantage. -

It's funny that the only bit of dialog that the video replays involves historically questionable content. Well OF COURSE your shots wouldn't penetrate "treble(!)-shotted at three hundred yards"!

Yeah, shorter storms would be nice.

hidden (temporary) outposts

Definitely yes. I suggested this as soon as the OW was released for initial testing. Otherwise the most interesting parts of the map are seldom used (e.g., the lagoons on the southern coast of Cuba.- 8 replies
