False surrender a xebec only mechanic
z4ys posted a topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Prolog: Shortly after Sterett had the American colors raised, he had his men open fire upon the Tripolitans at close range with muskets. In response, Tripoli returned fire with an ineffective broadside.[8] The Americans returned fire with their own broadsides, which led Rous to break off the engagement and attempt to flee. Neither able to fight off the American vessel nor outrun her, the Tripolitans attempted to grapple Enterprise and board her. Once within musket range, Enterprise's marines opened fire on the Tripoli, foiling its boarding attempt, and forced Tripoli to try to break away once more. Enterprise continued the engagement, firing more broadsides into the Tripolitan and blasting a hole in her hull.[9] Severely damaged, Tripoli struck her colors to indicate surrender. As Enterprise moved towards the vessel to accept its surrender, the Tripolitans hoisted their flag and fired upon Enterprise. The Tripolitans again attempted to board the American schooner, but were repelled by Enterprise's broadsides and musketry. After another exchange of fire, the Tripolitans struck their colors a second time. Sterett once more ceased firing and moved closer to Tripoli.[10] In response, Rous again raised his colors and attempted to board Enterprise. Enterprise's accurate gunnery once more forced Tripoli to veer off. As the action continued, Rous perfidiously feigned a third surrender in an attempt to draw the American schooner within grappling range. This time, Sterett kept his distance, and ordered Enterprise's guns to be lowered to aim at the polacca's waterline, a tactic that threatened to sink the enemy ship. The next American broadsides struck their target, causing massive damage, dismasting her mizzen-mast, and reducing her to a sinking condition.[11] With most of his crew dead or wounded, the injured Admiral Rous finally threw the Tripolitan flag into the sea to convince Sterett to end the action.[9] Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_of_1_August_1801 Suggestion: Give xebec the option to do a false surrender showing the ship with white flag but as soon as in boarding range to be able to hoist their colors again and to board right away. Pros: More accurrate game mechanics to sim rl Cons: More annoyed people- 34 replies

first i would start only with yard penalty. If its not enough maybe slowly give penalty to rudder turning speed. But yeah why not. A little bit of exaggeration but thats how i would say current path of sterncamping looks like. The light ship would suffer more sailing crew fatigue due to rapid maneuvering. But it all comes down how the big ship captain would react. If he accepts the turn fight he will suffer sailing crew fatigue as well.
-
I dont know if we need gun crew fatigue but sailing crew fatigue would reduce stern camping because constant swinging around and avoiding broadsides would reduce yard power. I can imagine a system that work like the boarding prep system. Every yard turn removes some prep of the pool while over time it slowly fills up. Constant maneuvering would reduce sail crew prep to 0. Reducing yard movement speed by 90%. In my opinion thats a better option than muskets to give big ships advantage over small ships and to reduce stern camping. Making broadside fights matter more.

Prolog Currently our flags stay untouched and look new even after tremendous rigging damage. Suggestion Flags get a damage layer like sails do, but complete destruction of the flag isnt possible. Details: After/during a battle flags could be damaged and look like this for increased immersion: Pro: increased immersion Con: Dev time

But why create special mechanics only for le requin and not for all ships? For example why i cant shoot yards on a square rigger but why demand it for the xebec? Why "Lateen sails suffer from a "bad tack" when the mast interrupts the foil shape." but square rigger can still sail with same force backwards? I am just against those double standards . Nerf sailforce on requin but let my bellona fly 15.5kn with spanish rig Nerf hammocks on requin but let me build a 200 crew prince -

requin can sink by 5 32pd leaks. niagara can mount 32pds on paper niagara can beat xebec -

we are missing many "sim" features but why only apply them to the xebec and not to all ships? -

to be p2w it has to apply to all circumstances not just one. if you have the requin you have to win always otherwise it cant be p2w -

Xebec Later in the 17th century some began to appear with a combination of lateen and more conventional square sails, of the kind used in northern Europe. This was achieved by hauling down the spar used for a lateen sail and hoisting up a new spar suitable for a square-rigged sail. More commonly, however, the lateen sails were left where they were, and square topsails were hoisted on smaller square-rig spars. This combination meant that, in the right hands, these craft could sail closer to the wind than most square-rigged European merchant ships, but could also take advantage of wind conditions that favoured square sails. By the very end of our period, in the late 17th century, the lateen sail on the mainmast was sometimes replaced by two or three square-rigged spars, carrying a square mainsail or course, a topsail and a topgallant. This development was, of course, due to the influence of the European renegades. However, for most of our period, and in most cases, a Barbary xebec would simply carry three lateen-rigged sails. The polacca The polacca might appear, to a landsman, to be virtually identical to the xebec. Both had three masts and generally similar-shaped hulls, but the polacca, though rigged with a combination of lateen and square sails, lacked the xebec’s versatility. It carried lateen sails on the mizzen mast and foremast, but in most cases the mainmast was designed to carry nothing but three square sails – a course, a topsail and a topgallant. Some also carried square topgallants above the lateen sails on the foremast and mizzen mast, but unlike the case with the xebec these were permanently rigged; the distinction is that a polacca did not carry a combination of lateen and square sails for selective use depending on wind conditions. The other major difference was that polaccas were generally broader beamed at the waterline than xebecs, since they were designed primarily to Source: The Barbary Pirates 15th-17th Centuries by Angus Konstam The only misleading part is -

all distadvantges the xebec shows in rl are not ingame due to the fact people dont want a "sim" game. no 100% real sailing physics xebec would carry way less provisions reducing time at sea untrained gunnery crews less redundant rope and blocks making it easier to cause rigging dmg and to disable But hey we all want to play eco less and arcadish and to sail upwind with our beloved squareriggers -

From a polacre-rigged xebec it was an easy transition to a full polacre. A point occurs where polacre xebecs become 'polacre-settees,' which were lateen rigged on the fore and mizzen (i.e. xebec with a polacre rig). By the late 18th century polacre-xebecs were soon fully ship-rigged and became true polacres, although some people merely call them xebec-frigates. However it is easy to see how the polacre could have developed from the xebec, considering the similar lines and features. The polacre has virtually the same hull shape as a xebec with all the standard features. The only difference was that the polacre was slightly larger than a xebec, so it is probable that the polacre was derived from larger xebecs, which were probaly rigged 'a la polacca' to supplement thier size. its not possible because all sails have different sail force. To equal the force you would have to let loose some ropes. (not ingame) Autoskipper wouldnt be able to sail the xebec and constant rudder would have to be applied. -

Lets for example look at windsurfing sail. You can change performance of the sail by adjusting the shape With the sail on the ground I push down on the sail with both hands. The sail foil should be just touching the boom on the other side. If it touches too easily I tense the outhaul more, if it doesn’t reach the boom I release some outhaul. This also depends on the wind. If the wind is light you can release the outhaul a little to make the sail curve more round. If the wind is stronger or you feel overpowered you can tense the outhaul more to make the curve flatter so the sail doesn’t pull as much. If we pull too much on the outhaul, the sail will be very flat, which means that it will lose the profile. This means that all the advantages of having a wing shape are lost and all you are left with is a wall for a sail. For vey strong winds this can help take some power out of the sail so that you can get back to the beach but the performance is greatly compromised. It is also not very good for the life of the sail. Not enough outhaul If we do not pull enough outhaul the sail will have too much of a curve. This is bad for two reasons: Firstly, we will not be able to go upwind as much as the angle of attach when on a close haul is steeper. Secondly, the battens will not be able to change the side of the mast easily. If they don’t change onto the lee side we have a bad sail profile which is not efficient. And if they have to be passed on to the other side with a lot of force, the end of the batten sleeve will wear out fast and there will come a moment when you have the batten poking out next to the mast. Source: http://howtowindsurf101.com/how-to-tune-a-windsurf-sail/ -------------------------------------------------------- Applying that to the game. The xebec performs to good sailing with all sails pressed against the mast. Thats why some pictures show the lateen sail on differend sides. To keep at least some performance and make it possible to change heading in a fight. All 3 yards on one side was only used on long sails were it was certain that maneuvering will not happen. And square riggers still perform to good when sailing backwards. They would suffer the same effect Schooner have due to the sail combination an advantage where one sails feed the other sail with wind making them actual perform better close to the wind. But that are all rl physics which the game does not consider currently making it so that in theory some ships perform better as they should. -

A xebec with scare sails is called polacca source : The Barbary Pirates 15th-17th Centuries by Angus Konstam As I said many times before. We dont have slipstream and reduced performance when sail is pressed against the mast. Any ship suffers such rl issues ingame thats why all our vessel perform actual to good or in chase of schooners to bad. -

It's a boarding ship Ofc it has more crew. So everyone can be certain the "how will the enemy (xebec) approach me ?" Is related to ppk(push pull kill). Take counter measures accordingly. Like extend downwind, focus on crew (which can now be dmged correct after the crew hotfix [not in patchnotes but got fixed]. Crew on the xebec is on all decks even there are no guns. Shoot at the deck with the helm and you can kill a lot of crew. When leaks are not certain aim high that the balls go through the planking can kill crew. Use your chaser while extending either to chain or to demast. Only engage when the xebec is crippled regarding crew or sails. A withdrawing xebec is a win they don't have to be sunk.
