Triangle Trade
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Rithal's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
I think we can be historical without including slavery. Yes, it happened, however, such a bleak spot in human history doesn't need to be placed in a game that is meant to be fun in my opinion. Much like excluding women as ship captains, it's just an unnecessary bow to history. -
Portside Business?
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Mageprince's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
In my opinion, pirate towns should buy cheap and sell high. If you come in with a big cargo to sell, they're not going to be able to sell most of that locally, it'll have to be fenced or otherwise given proper stamps and false papers to be taken and sold in a "legitimate" port elsewhere (what are the locals going to do with a few tons of cotton, or whatnot???). So you should get rock bottom dollar when you sell, and have to pay extra for the same problems for goods that you purchase. Piracy and freeports, while they don't involve Crown Taxes, do involve paying off the local warlords and fences, as well as covering "protection" money, etc. to keep the local legitimate governments off of your back. It's not like everyone in the area won't know what and where a pirate port is - the key is in nobody legitimate in the area deciding to get a few SOLs and wiping it off of the map. To do that takes tons of bribes and other gratuities to keep the authorities looking the wrong direction. This reduction in income and higher price structure will keep piracy a less attractive option, which it should be. -
Wind Scale, wind effect on a Ship

I wouldn't say it's "never" terribly radical, but given no adverse weather or fronts in the area, changes are generally more gradual than currently modeled. -
Where did you get your In-Game name from?
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Sir Madoc's topic in Tavern
Yup, I recognized you sir. I go by triptyx on those forums. To the OP: I ran down a list of Captains of the Royal Navy and found a name I liked. It just happened that Admiral Sir Darby was also at the Nile, and was a fairly distinguished Captain overall. I find it fun to roleplay a gentleman of the era on the forums, but what you may find fun is up to you. I do not judge folks by their names, but rather by the conduct. An extra bonus to a historical name is that you can put some history in your About section on the forums for your chosen name, which can help to further folks' education on Naval History. I would like to see more non-British names as well. If you're planning a particular nation, it may be even more fun to find someone from that nation to use as your nomme de guerre. -
Ship subforums?
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Mitchverr's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
I have offered to host a Screwturn Wiki for Naval Action on my server, but nobody yet has taken me up on the offer to maintain it (I don't have time to do so myself). The offer is still on the table. -
Your video card seems to support DirectX 11, which is usually the main limitation on being able to run the game. I play on a fairly old Latitude laptop and get 20-30fps on Low, which looks great as far as I'm concerned, so you can run it, and you should have a good gaming experience. I don't have any experience with Radeon though, I'm on an NVidia card, so take my words with a grain of salt sir.

Question about system requirements and DRM
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Vek74's topic in Support
I play on low and am perfectly happy. I know I'm missing out on some of the pretty, but even at low settings I have no complaints. -
I also want to know if my PC can Handle this Game
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Asdwdsa's topic in Support
Just depends on the machine Mr. Coffey. Some may have an expansion port on the board that allows a mobile NVidia GPU to be slotted in (such as the Latitude I play on), but in general, you're correct. -
Sounds like an amazing rig! Congrats on having the fortitude to work had and save for something you really wanted. Never be ashamed of something you're proud of as long as you're not rubbing it in someone's face (which you're not).

I beta'd Warbirds (started beta when it was called Confirmed Kill) and I couldn't afford to play when it was $1.99/hr. That was ridiculous.

Joe, PreOrders are currently only available from the PreOrder page: http://www.navalaction.com/preorder/ through the Paypal link. Be aware that due to demand, Naval Action ran out of keys from Valve, so there will be a delay until next week before they can send you one if you PreOrder. -
Wind Scale, wind effect on a Ship
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Ned Loe's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Let's avoid "magic" barometers. You're right, though, in that you could have an immediate forecast mechanic, and basing it on crew or officer skill sounds pretty intriguing. Not a bad idea overall, as long as it's fairly vague and usually inaccurate. -
Wind Scale, wind effect on a Ship
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Ned Loe's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Yes, but, I'd like them to implement it in a way that does not allow me to pull a weather report on WeatherUnderground and use that to plan ahead. Captains at the time had only a barometer and the way the sky looked/winds acted to determine how the weather was going to shape up, and I'd like that recreated here. See above. I shouldn't have detailed weather information to use to plan anything. I should have access to recent barometric history (rising, falling, holding, etc) and recent observations of wind conditions to use. -
Naval Action on Youtube

On the off chance that the new batch of keys is insufficient, I might suggest you get in line early by purchasing a key as soon as you can.- 829 replies

Save your pennies! There are a number of very inexpensive laptops that could likely run it these days. Trust me though, before I realized a problem with my drivers on my computer, I thought I couldn't run it either and I was extremely crushed. So sorry to be the bearer of bad news mate.

Unfortunately, the video card itself must have the hardware to support Direct X 11. That particular Intel Card only supports Direct X 10. So even though you have DX11 installed, the card lacks the hardware to run it. You'll need to get new hardware to play the game I'm very sorry to say.

Hard to say without knowing the particular chip version (such as 3000, 4000, etc).

What video card do you have? This is usually a result of not having a new enough video card.

Awesome! Now go fire some cannon!

Don't quote me, but from what I've read, you might get a key today. If you do not get one today, you won't get one until the next batch of keys is received from Valve and that will likely be next week.

Modify the names over the ships ?
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Magnum's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
No worries! It provides a reference point that you may not otherwise have had, and it's far more critical if the target isn't moving parallel with you - you can track it by the name while you're waiting for the smoke to clear. It will also be critical in situations where the smoke doesn't clear very fast, say, light air, and you have a friendly sail between you - seeing that green name come into view despite the smoke allows you more information than you should have about what's there and what's not. Low visibility due to smoke was a factor in quite a few historical battles. -
This is a temporary mechanic to ensure all ships get tested adequately. It will not bear much resemblance to the actual game at release. Variable weather to come in the future. AI will be used quite a bit in the end-game. The Developers are quite aware of their current limitations and when they have time to come back to AI again, you'll see changes for the better. Maps are temporary, the land isn't even solid yet because it's an Alpha and they haven't implemented that feature. More people on deck than you see right now was found too taxing for the graphics system - for now. Get a lot of your crew killed and you'll rapidly notice that the game engine itself requires more than one person to serve a gun. The Developers are quite aware of staffing needs to adequately fight a gun, and the underlying game mechanics take that into account. Now here many of us are in agreement. Look around for posts by Maturin, he's advocating for slower sail plan changes. Hauling a yard is one thing, but fully furling a sail is currently too fast in my opinion. This may or may not be true and depends on the total crew and training levels of the ship, as well as what else was going on at the time. You do have a point. They were only undercrewed because there weren't enough people to crew them running about for the press gangs to nab. This doesn't mean we should intentionally undercrew ships at this early point in the game. Perhaps Open World can have mechanics making it difficult to fully crew a vessel based on certain rules. It's an Alpha. There are already discussions about morale and how that system should be implemented being undertaken. Pace and speed is fine for casual gaming. Many people agree that it is close to what it needs to be for maximum enjoyment. The number of people that have 3 hours to give to a single engagement is far lower than the number of people that can give an hour. Please slow down and take some time to cruise the various forums to see what is being discussed. I get the feeling from your post you don't understand that this is an extremely early stage in development for this game, and there is a ton of work yet to be done before it is released. Take part in those discussions a help the developers make the best game possible.
