Cost of being a merhcant
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Mass's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Ok, let's back this up a little. How would you put a player character in "jail"? What alternative, game friendly mechanics can you think of instead of "jail"? Players need to be able to play the game, and sitting in jail isn't fun. -
How do I create a default naval action account?
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to SLeona's topic in Support
I think I had the chance to override the name when I first logged in, but I'm not sure - I was in a rush to get in that day. -

Unfortunately, changing your Steam name in any form will not update Naval Action - your name in NA is set the first moment you log in. Character Creation features, once they're implemented, will allow current players to select a new name, but for now, you're stuck with what you have. -
You watch the sail(s) very carefully, and pay attention to how the rudder feels, whether or not it's fighting you and in what direction. The below apply to Marconi/Gaff Rigged Vessels: In modern sails, we also have little plastic telltale streamers at key points on the sails that can tell us how the air is flowing over the sail in that area. Minus the telltales, you effectively let the sail out until the luff stalls a tad, then you sheet it in just a hair and you're good - that's assuming you don't have too much sail up for the conditions. If you're sailing as close to the wind as possible, you "luff up and touch her", you pull the bow up into the wind until the luff starts to stall, and then let the bow fall back off a tad. The exact, fastest spot for the sails at any given moment is dependent on a ton of different factors, including wind speed, how much canvas you have spread, boat speed, sail trim, sail condition, shroud/stay tension, rigging setup (very closely related to sail trim), etc.

Ramming - why so serious?

Doh, I did mean the opposite. Updating my post - I'm operating on less than an hour of sleep. Thank you sir! -
Ingame chat color for mods.
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to SirWili's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
That said, having worked with Law Enforcement, there is an extra benefit to having marked over unmarked units. A marked car sitting beside the road will cause everyone to slow down. An unmarked car will only catch one person, everyone else will never know it's there. I'm not sure if we'd see the same effect here or not. Knowing there is a moderator in the lobby would go a long ways towards curbing unwanted behavior, versus an incognito mod whom nobody knows is lurking. -
Ramming - why so serious?
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to MATANZA's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
hehe, I figured, but had to poke some fun. I was also under the impression that shots to the bow were more desirable than shots to the sides. That said, a cannonball is very different than the wooden sides of another ship. The prow is quite narrow, which increases the PSI of the impact, the keel, and the longitudinal axis of the ship will reinforce that impact point and share the load to a degree, and in return, it is applying all of that pressure to the sides of planking, reinforced by bent (or grown that way) wood. It is my opinion that, with regards to most ships, a bow hitting the side of another ship will do more damage to the side of the ship than to the bow. Now, that doesn't mean you won't spring leaks and have a bashed up bow, but I think the damage, all other things being equal, will be higher in the ramming rammed ship than in the rammed ramming ship. -

I'm not sure I follow you sir. Nobody is backing over a ship to ram it, and the bow structure itself is one of the stronger spots on the ship with regard to applying force to another object. It's reinforced and pointy - two very nice things when you're talking the physics of ramming another object. -
A begging letter to the Devs.

The lead developer and Producer for the game is quoted above in direct response to your post. There is no higher authority. You'll get a key as long as Your payment clears. -
How do I create a default naval action account?
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to SLeona's topic in Support
Right now, the Steam Name is used when you create your account. Once the developers work on the Character Creation functionality, they have said you will be able to change it then. Sorry for the inconvenience! -
As far as I know, if you can still see the Paypal button on the Naval Action web site, pre-orders are still open. I wouldn't wait.

If he has DirectX 11 installed, and updated drivers, he needs a new video card.

Bought the game cant seem to down load

Captain Dave, if you were able to complete your purchase, you have nothing to worry about. They'll turn off the link when they're done adding Alpha Testers. -
Naval Action Twitch Art Contest

Really nice effort. To me, the anchor looks too much like a T. Natal Action. -

I suppose we could give you a barrel with a small trysail mast and a pistol mounted upon it to cool your ardour. Please rest assured your key will arrive as soon as the Developers can sit down and get the various waiting keys processed. Please avoid spamming the Admiralty Forums with too many requests to hurry - it just slows them down. -

Keys are sent out every Friday before 11pm or so Kiev Time. Since they are temporarily suspending adding players, you might see it sooner. Patience Captain! Your orders are being processed by the Admiralty and your ship is being provisioned. -
Steam picture
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Wicked Mouse's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
Heya Wicked. I moved it to General because it wasn't directly discussing functionality or bugs related to the current Sea Trials build. It's a great image (I'm going to use it myself!), we're just trying to keep Sea Trials a clean space for the Developers to see issues with the Alpha build. No worries, sorry if there was any misunderstanding. -
Please yield to larger ships. In fact, if you're following a friendly ship, keep an eye on the minimap. You had lots of time to notice his new turn and could have reduced sail, and made a turn to port. This would have allowed you to maintain firing position on the enemy ship, while not ramming into the SOL or getting in between him and his target. You are light years more maneuverable than a Santisima, with far less firepower. Give way please. That SOL represents your best hope of winning the match. Anything you do to hinder his ability to maneuver or fire is a serious detriment to the team.

Warning pings!

The Developers are aware of the headaches with the chat not exiting focus after you send a message. They've indicated fixes are in the works. -
While he's not an authoritative expert, O'Brian references buoying the anchor cable and slipping it. As you've mentioned, you don't need to hold up the anchor itself with the buoy, just the length of cable that is coming up from the bottom. You could use empty casks or other items on board to do this pretty easily as long as you were in extremely deep water I would think.
