My understanding at this time is that rig damage due to heavy weather is not part of 4.0 (or if it is, it hasn't been announced as such). Damage Model 4.0 is far more about individual hit boxes for the various components of a ship instead of flat percentage based module damage (e.g. your pump having a 4% - for example, I'm not sure of the real number - chance of being hit by a cannon ball, regardless of where the ball hits).

Did I do it wrong?

How about we take Admin's response in context instead. Here is the original post that Admin's post that I quoted regarding a "free for all" was responding to: PvP is a free for all was in response to this Captain's question as to whether or not it is ok for a small ship to be in the full PvP room. Admin then went on to indicate that if they do not want something to happen, they will use game mechanics to restrict it, he then referenced the other post I quoted where they added a circle to PvP to prevent people from running away down wind the entire fight and forcing all of the ships to spend a long time chasing them down. Open World escape tactics are for Open World, Sea Trials is to test sailing characteristics and combat mechanics. Now that we have a circle, as I indicated above, running away while within the circle and staying out of range is within the rules. The rules being, sail outside of the circle and you get sunk after a certain time period. At the moment, anything inside of that circle is fair game. Now, with regards to your assertion that people are being totalitarian, wasn't it you who just yesterday argued that there should be no limits on behavior other than what the community as a whole will tolerate, with the community shunning and providing negatives for that behavior if they found it objectionable? How can you then argue that people are wrong to tell others they disagree with their playstyle and encourage them to approach the game differently? The OP specifically asked the community's opinion about their actions, the community has responded, there's nothing wrong with that. As to testing, this is an early Alpha Test. Alpha testing is marked with particular objectives and instructions for data gathering and play-test information. We already know that you can drag a fight out for an extremely long time by refusing to engage and running as hard as you can in the other direction. Trust me, it works, it doesn't need to be done by players match after match. The following are my personal opinion only - not an official stance of Game Labs: 1. If the player isn't using the insult generator, not ok. Treat each other with respect, use the insult generator if you must directly address someone in a negative manner, and have fun shooting at each other. 2. Situational. In my opinion, if the enemy is strung out, and you have a legitimate chance of killing them one at a time, great! Do so. I've personally done this in a Surprise solo against a Snow and two Cutters. The Cutters left the Snow alone by tacking early, so I ran the Snow downwind alone and killed him. I then let the Cutters approach, but they were working together very well and causing me quite a bit of damage, so I maneuvered them onto opposite tacks and then ran one of them downwind while his mate tried to catch up. After I killed him, I turned and killed the final ship (and they had done a lot of damage to me in the mean time - it was close). Using distance to even the odds, if you're actively fighting is good gameplay. On the other hand, if you're a Surprise and the enemy has a Bellona, Constitution, and a couple of Trincomalees left, and you're just running full tilt away with no efforts to engage them to draw the match out, this is pretty mean-spirited - again, in my opinion only. 3. Running away and flat out not fighting - why are you in a PvP match at all? This is letting down your fellow teammates, and adding frustration to folks that are looking for a great, fun match. Go play PvE and sail away to your heart's content. The bots won't mind. Now, let's please bring this thread back onto the OP's original topic and away from community management and behavior. Thank you.- 77 replies

Did I do it wrong?
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to AwkwardDavies's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
Mr. Khan, we are not currently testing "Open World Tactics". This is Sea Trials, we are testing ship to ship combat and balance. That does not include running away the whole match without trying to engage. The circle has been added, please fight your ship. Once the Open World is available for testing, there will be plenty of time to experiment with the instance escape mechanics.- 77 replies

In game actions within the boundaries of the mechanics are welcome and expected. By all means, find the enemy, and sink, burn, or take her a prize any way you lawfully can. People creating a toxic environment of hate and extreme rudeness towards other players will not be tolerated. Everyone has paid their money, and everyone deserves to be treated with a basic level of respect by their fellow players.

One small thought - applying historical behaviors to a system that has no loss, no setback if you're destroyed, no risk to one's self isn't the best approach in my opinion. Once we have Open World, where you may want to try and save your ship and crew from a superior force to preserve them and your ship, making a tactical withdrawal will be an excellent idea. In the current Sea Trials, it's a tad boorish in my opinion. But as Admin has mentioned, since it truly doesn't matter either way, the pursuers can leave the battle just as easily as the pursued, so it's a wash ethically.- 77 replies

I was hoping maybe it would tie into the odd behaviors seen when controls are customized. When this happens, how long ago had you hit Q/E or Z/C? If you had hit those keys, had you mashed them down, or tapped a few times? -
Everyone always thinks they want Democracy, right up until it gets abused by coordinated attacks. Let's say your guild doesn't like someone, you simply post in your forums "make sure to block Henry whenever you see him, his ship is the wrong shade of blue". Next thing you know, Henry faces punishment for nothing more than having a ship in a particular shade of blue that he fancies. Either the number of reports has to be so high to prevent abuse that it is meaningless, or people are getting punished left and right for private quarrels. We have a number of moderators who themselves are overseen by Admin, we have a report function, my personal opinion is that things are working as intended right now.

Toxic online behaviour
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Brigand's topic in Tribunal - Трибунал
We don't need this to turn into rules lawyering or accusations of favoritism. No set of rules can be written in such a way as to be complete and unambiguous, while still being readable, easy to follow, and easily enforced. Because of this, some amount of common sense must be applied by the player base in following those rules, or in being adult enough to apologize if you are found to have crossed the line. If you feel the rules have been applied inappropriately or with bias, please contact an uninvolved moderator or use the support email. Let's keep this thread on topic please! -

Who to aim at first?
Henry d'Esterre Darby replied to Steel's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
As this is a discussion of tactics, and not current build game mechanics, I'm moving the thread to General Discussion, where it will not distract the developers from discussions of changes, problems, or features of the current Sea Trials build. Thanks! -

Those of you having this problem - have you customized your controls at all? Or are they bone-stock default - never been modified? -
Please follow BungeeLemming's advice. With a Tester badge, you should have access to the game regardless of your pre-order. That said, there may also be value in having that pre-order key, which you have paid for already. Please send an email to the support address on Mr. Lemming's response, indicate that you were a Tester and don't have access, and also indicate that you pre-ordered when the page was up and haven't yet received a Steam Key. While you're at it, ask them how you should proceed given that you have both Tester and Pre-Order status.

For grins, have you tried bypassing everything but the modem by plugging directly into it? If the modem is an all in one switch/router/firewall, that might be pointless. Heck, try Starbucks (though I'm not sure if they're passing the correct ports there or not).

If you're ever in doubt, it's likely better not to post it. That said, you can always PM a forumer with a Moderator role if you need to ask a question about something you'd like to post, we'll be happy to answer your question. -
Thanks Maturin. I knew it was extremely applicable to racing, but wasn't sure about in reference to general navigation. In my real world experience, the vessel with the fewest and lowest powered water balloon launchers has to give way. Makes regattas extremely interesting when people have surgical tube launchers installed amongst the stanchions and shrouds.

This has nothing to do with "turning" to port sir, and everything to do with what tack the ship is on. The image references a port tack versus a starboard tack, and in many cases is more for racing I believe. In game, the bigger ship has the right of way. The larger ship is harder to maneuver, and has more guns to bring on the enemy. Please give way at all times to the larger ship so they can maximize the damage on the enemy.

Personally, I don't put a full broadside through the main sail area of a friendly. I have led or trailed a ball or two through a flying jib or spanker as the boat drifted into the very first/last part of my broadside, but the real risk you run with a full broadside through the sail plan is taking down a mast, which would be bad for your team. So: 1 - no, I shiver the sails and let the friendly by. 2, definitely not. I'm worried about taking down/weakening a mast. 3, if that friendly is coming, and I might trail a ball or two through the flying jib, I'll generally take the shot as that single ball isn't really going to do appreciable damage.
