It is bloody sad that players cannot separate a game NATION from players NATION. It is not hard people, not hard at all. Keep it simple and healthy.

- Letter to a friend - Dear friend, I must conclude that your plans for the Charleston establishment have been successful given the latest news that have been floating around every free port I have visited, but without any letter from you reassuring of a complete and unopposed achievement it becomes somewhat hard to separate the truth from the hearsay, so I patiently await any communication on your behalf. Nonetheless I must fill you in about the latest developments in the South. I am sure you know of the big events that took place on the eastern reaches of the United Provinces colonies with all ports being liberated from Swedish occupation. This is indeed great news for both of us as it opens way to our most pressing concerns, but we will get to that at a later date once I have established relations with our informants at the new outposts. One thing that surely warrants our attention is a rumor about a massive transport of valuables from the Dutch colonies to Europe. I will try to investigate this rumors in detail but word is that a vast quantity of silver was ordered by the Prince and, given that the war with Sweden still goes on, that it must leave the colonies in the fortnight, due month or similar schedule. Also on this subject and maybe as a signal that all of this might be true a new type of transport vessel, named Large Guts, or like the french like, Gros Ventre, have been delivered to the colonies along with teams of builders for this model to be built in the shipyards at Willemstad. Given the speed and cargo space along with the defensive armament this vessels would be a definitive choice for a Dutch Silver Fleet, but as I said before I will try to uncover more details about this. Imagine wild, my friend, the amount of treasure that only one of those ships can carry… let alone a fleet. We must find more details about their schedule so I urge you to take measures on your side of the Caribbean to find more about this and especially try to misinform any interested parties so the challenge to the treasure hunt is minimized. Your trustful friend, H.E. p.s. - Tell our mutual friend that they are on her trail. Progress warrants Liberty. -

Let's take one example from History where a captain had that decision taken from him, shall we ? 5th July 1833, Cape St. Vincent. Flag Admiral for the Absolutist Monarchy tries, after being wounded in boarding combat by Charles Napier, the commander of the Liberal Fleet, to light up the gunpowder store and explode the ship. He was shot on the spot by the men ( his men! ) responsible for safeguarding the gunpowder. No sane crew would ever allow a captain to purposedly explode the ship with them on it. Sorry.

Are 3rd rates too disposable?
Hethwill, the Red Duke replied to Ian2492's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Up to and including 5th rates. 6th rates and below are okay I guess. Obviously trader versions not included. -
From all the time spent with the Dutch Antilles Squadron folks I think you will like it. I can't recall any situation when all things went overboard inside the community plus the international soul of it makes it a excelent choice. Great group I must say, and on the bonus side the TS is shared with other groups so there's always a lot going on. Even now, as I am going freebooter, I am still welcomed there with no problems. Highly recommended for either new comers and veterans and old testers alike.

Citizens of Gustavi fought back on french raiding fleet
Hethwill, the Red Duke replied to Nordtman's topic in National news
Nordtman, a suggestion, can you make a thread, kind of a newspaper thing, that routinely gets updated with the Drunk'en exploits ? Thanks in advance as it would make it easier for anyone interested ( not in flaming ofc ) to check out instead of having new threads everytime Salute. -
PvP1 Sweden at war with the Dutch
Hethwill, the Red Duke replied to Admiral Jacob Bagge's topic in National news
Gentlemen do enjoy the game for what it is and cut with the flame. There are too many facts to even start pointing fingers from both sides of the fence and even from the onlookers. It will only stop until the gates of Gustavia or the bay of Willemstad are under siege. No turning back now. Naval Action !!!!! more fighting less talking. ... Again.. I blame the fact that 2/3 of the players in all nations are left outside the operations given the timers which effectively only cover 1 part of the world at a time, unless we Setup alarm clocks... which is silly as hell to do for a game... If you set timers for EU you disregard your AUS NZ and USA / CAN regions. If you Setup USA CAN timers you disregard the other... etc We have a problem. All Nations have this issue. It must be solved without resorting only to our own individual comfort but to the NATION as whole. Game is not based in clan/corporation level. It is based on NATION community level. Deal with it. -
- Log entry - - Third day of April, Year of Our Saviour Two thousand and sixteen Weather is clear. Horizon visibility at 16 miles. No sails reported in the last 6 hours. After all the confusion setting up the new base of operations, and with the accord of all the good men that kept up with me all this time we took to the sea searching for prizes and in truth we have been blessed with a good start. Of note that our former investors did send a letter asking, once more, for the urgent return of the other five ships of the privateer fleet. This will not happen. All ships were secured with our efforts and with our rightful share of the prizes. Naturally as seeing a big part of the effort ( and blood of many ) being disregarded as mere currency the Aardwolf Quartermaster, Sir Elias Gropp, the youngest son of a baron somewhere in Saxony, or so he claims, flung into a rage and knocked the courier senseless with one stroke of his baton. Sadly the courier died this morning having succumbed to the blood clot in the skull. We gave him burial at sea and will dismiss the matter completely. Onto other subjects. Our prize count is now at three merchant ships, all of them hailing the French colours which cargo, after rounded up and sold through our provisioner at Coquibacoa, yielded no less than 5 thousand pieces of eight. (( OOC: basically 40 thousand gold in game currency )). Silver, cotton and copper in good quantities for the most part. Also the crew salvaged some guns mainly 4 pounders, medium length, which we will be running on trials for the next days. After the necessary refitting and repairs and supplies the entire crew, each man received their portion. We voted to use the navy standards with bonus for active duty crewmen. Given the entire company numbers 450 souls with a rotation system we are able to give every man a fair share of all the prizes, enough rest and work at the dry docks. This also ensures that if the need arises we can effectively crew the frigate of war for action. Before we left port I told our provisioner, Mister Ignacio Parente, a old privateer fleet commander from Pernambuco, to register any mercenary companies that would be searching for work, not sailors nor artillerymen but fusiliers and marines. We now set up again at Candle Bay and wait. The silver flowing through this reach is in such quantities that it cannot be ignored. A youngster runs up to the Dutch Antilles Squadron representative and without saying a word hands over a message and runs away disappearing into the crowd. It reads... " Please warn your merchants and all associates that any ship of any nationality sailing within reach of Candle Bay will be prized along with any cargo or valuable found. Crews will be spared whenever possible. Exceptions will be made for recognized individual captain's colours." It is signed with the words "Hyena of Coquibacoa".

I would guess that we use a interface to a system while the AI is the system... ( I wonder why there's no captain named Skynet Bones... ) If I, or anyone, find the old posts about this I will post it here, if dev answer before all the better. -

PvP1 Sweden at war with the Dutch
Hethwill, the Red Duke replied to Admiral Jacob Bagge's topic in National news
First day of April Year of Our Saviour Two Thousand and Sixteen At the Lodge “Wild Wet Wench”, free port Coquibacoa Last official letter as captain under the patronage of the United Provinces of the West Indies, To the Commander of the Irregular Fleet and Master Quartermaster for the Nation Privateers and to whom it may concern, most especially all the esteemed captains and admirals of the Fleet, Dutch Antilles Squadron and Associates. Grave news arrived from Europe this morning and despite the situation on the colonies requiring my services I must be honest to my crew, them who have faithfully followed me through it all. Without the continued support from my investors, which shall remain anonymous hoping for a return of grace, it will be impossible to continue funding a privateering company in the Antilles and Colonies. This support was vital for the supplying of crews and ships but in return the investment had to be returned three times in resources, prizes and, whenever possible, captured documents and information about the other European powers presence in the Caribbean. For a while all went downwind, loot and prizes aplenty and our Investors even dared to make a move into the politics scene providing enough support for several rulings of laws to ease the lifeline support from Europe to the Colonies, the now extinct Progressive Party. Let us say that with the recent events in France and the ever threatening rise of the liberal constitutionalism republican ideas all Absolut power from the crown fell onto the possible enemies, or imaginary enemies, of the Prince and associates. Our Investors salvaged as much as they could but send me the order to return all ships from the privateer fleet immediately upon closure of their representation offices at Fort Zoutman and Willemstad. Thankfully, and I risk a dagger in the back for putting this into a official letter, the continuous war between the United Provinces and the Sweden Colonies provided me and my crew means of keeping ships for ourselves that otherwise would be prized and sold to cover the due payments to my investors. As such, and with precious help from some new associates that work on the fringes of colonial power society, we been able to keep five vessels of the fleet, but not before returning another five to our investors in Europe, being the one which hurt us the most to see departing the Aardwolf King. To be noted that before we let her go some of my faithful crew exchanged the 12 pounders of the gun deck for sixes. We will be using those twelves on our own modified frigate and replace the top guns, transforming it into a more interesting vessel, a privateer frigate. News of this must have traveled fast in the colonies for at the very first shake run of the Hyena, a beautiful sloop of war that has served us extremely well in the past and was docked for repairs for a while, we were attacked by three captains flying the United Provinces colours. Two of them were unknown and did not respond to any attempts to communicate. One of them was put to the water. The other was successfully disengaged after a good fight in the eastern shallows approach to Las Aves which the crew voted as not worthy to pursue given it was a warship and would yield nothing worth. Another captain intercepted us and, despite our attempts to get a good wind on their ship, showed good handling of the ship and wind always reversing upwind and keeping us under the guns. We had to extend the contact and eventually disengage. The crew decided, and I approved, of returning to our new homebase. After a long and uneventful sail we came upon a trader. The crew was at a loss of what to do, as was I. This was completely new. Not waging a privateer war but fighting for our own subsistence with taking prizes, whatever nation. Pirates… how I hate that word. Freebooterz serves us better. Hethwill Eskeath Freebooter Captain The Hyena of Coquibacoa -
Damage Farming - Demotions
Hethwill, the Red Duke replied to admin's topic in News Announcements & Important discussions
Sure thing. But given it is for certain a Setup combat specifically for "farming" I think you will not be able to SEE and REPORT it. Therefore the devs have the system Setup since sea trials to root them out. -

Damage Farming - Demotions
Hethwill, the Red Duke replied to admin's topic in News Announcements & Important discussions
It is slightly more "interesting" than that so the devs have a keen eye for it and KNOW the difference. I did have more than a few combats that ended in a retreat from both sides after hard combat and they would never be considered like "farming". -
