A talent tree to diversify gameplay
maturin replied to monstermp's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Sounds like you've got plenty of ideas for developing your own seafaring RPG. -
I think we would be better off stripping gankers of rewards than giving rewards to gankees. I know I will always run, no matter how much I could earn. Out of spite.
-
Will the XP-assist earning encourage ganking?

Not HMS Victory, unless Victory had a kid whose mother drank a lot in the third trimester. It always cracks me up in these movies how the Royal Navy ships are crewed almost entirely by redcoats. Because the British have to be effete elitists from the officer corps all the way down through the ranks, and only the pirates can be ruggedly handsome authentic salt-of-the-sea types.

Speeding the game up to save it.
maturin replied to Teamski's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
1-2 hour outpost teleport would be nice. Coupled with much harsher teleport-to-capital limitations. -
Sounds like a good change if it was intentional.

Careless loss of a Pirate 1st Rate Victory
maturin replied to Charles Caldwell's topic in National news
Everyone go and try to flip ships now. -
Agreed. And some unexpected awesome goodies long asked-for. Just one bit of serious collateral damage: PLEASE make this apply to port battles ONLY. You just made it impossible to test the game, practice sailing, take screenshots... everything.

A 'meh' on all your houses. There has already been far more energy spent whining about this utterly pointless port in the middle of nowhere, than was ever spent on trying to take it. Especially when the British have had half a dozen chances to attack it unmolested since then. If the punishment were to fit the crime, a 24-hour time-out would be in order.* And on the other side of the coin, everyone with half a brain had already foreseen this exploit. No one was doing anyone a service by demonstrating it in practice. Pretty sure I've already written several posts on how to limit flags while avoiding this precise type of skullduggery. *It's the apparent hiding of tracks that is the more severe offense. If I were the devs I would call for he perpetrator to confess in private or face a sterner punishment.

How do you gank someone in a privateer? Going after people running missions is just about the only way to find an even fight without being ganked yourself by those 'worthy' opponents you refer to.

Oak Logs for the Constitution
maturin replied to eriks's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
Ordinary oak from Indiana, I believe. The live oak scantlings aren't seeing much restoration work this time around. Funny how those logs make the ship look so small. It's suddenly easier to imagine putting a forest's worth into her. -
Not much point punishing the alts. But if the money trail can't followed back to a real character, then ban both alt accounts. At least the perpetrator will lose $40-$80 for the alt accounts. I don't know if this is a bannable offense for the main account. But wrongdoers that require chasing and don't turn themselves in get dealt with more harshly.

Are 3rd rates too disposable?
maturin replied to Ian2492's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
That's why there is durability. You can lose 4 times in one night with absolutely zero impact on your ability to participate. And this assumes that you are one of those mythical players who only has a single ship. -
Game is bleeding players
maturin replied to Blood Eagle's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
The longer you go without a patch, the less players there are. It's a cycle that has already repeated half a dozen times. The only difference now is that people may have left because they got zerged in RvR. But that's the kind of player who will come back once the mechanics are fixed. Pretty sure all the Danes are on PvP 1, taking over the Caribbean. -
Are 3rd rates too disposable?
maturin replied to Ian2492's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
That sort of thing is totally standard MMO fare, right? We're just all used to the placeholder systems. And at the same time we could come down hard on ganks. No gold, XP or redeemables for fights with lopsided BR ratings. Lost battles provide the current level of rewards or less, unless you are credited with a kill. -
This is why I want to murder everyone who glibly says 'the ramming physics are fine, brah.' Then I just close my eyes and imagine them saying it with Donald Trump's voice.

Are 3rd rates too disposable?
maturin replied to Ian2492's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
The game needs to look at PotBS or even WoW in this regard. Simply bumping the PvP gold gain sky-high is a poor choice, but PvP rewards can be as high as you want if you make them victory-based. Beating your opponents in fair or nearly-fair fights should provide redeemable items that can be turned in for crafting notes, mods and cash. Heck, I wonder what would happen if both cash and XP from PvP became dependent on similar BR. People would need to gank against their own profit motive. -
Abuse of flag mechanics to block assault on port

I accept your retraction. -
Abuse of flag mechanics to block assault on port

Does anyone here seriously not have enough gold to buy a flag? This kind of stunt only requires one person with an alternate account, nothing more. -
My sense is that if people don't call for storm battles (the game's most impressive technological and artistic achievement so far), they won't ever reappear. They take up space in the list of instances that can be run, and the devs seem burned by all the hate they received in Sea Trials. Well, the problem was simply their frequency. With the current OW weather, they will go back to being a rare treat. Speaking of OW weather, what ever happened to the sever storms we had earlier? Seeing lightning flash on the horizon was a huge 'oh-shit' moment that I miss a lot.

I know that yellow ships are taking over. But if the abstract, invisible phenomenon of other people using yellow ships while you have a purple one destroys your ability to enjoy the game, that is really not the game's fault. And this nebulous idea of 'doing something about loss' would require the quality system to scrapped entirely, or else even the Chinese gold farmers would go 3/5.

Renommee vs Trincomalee
maturin replied to scubasteve04's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
There's no such things as a tackler without bow chasers in this game. Blame battle timers. -
30 x 32lb @ 14 per "crew" = 210 men 28 x 24lb @ 12 per "crew" = 168 men 30 x 12lb 9ft @ 10 per "crew" = 150 men 2 x 12lb 8.5ft @ 10 per "crew" = 10 men 2 x 68lb 5.33ft @ 10 per "crew" = 10 men 12 x 12lb 7.5ft @ 10 per "crew" = 60 men All told: 608 men for the great guns, plus men in the powder magazines and gangways to provide powder to the three decks. Each deck would normally be served from one magazine and gangway on a ship of the line to reduce the risk of accidents caused by improper allocation of powder. Ammunition would be issued from the ammunition handlers to the powder men at the ammunition point on each deck, only on the return of an empty cartridge case, to avoid the build up of unused powder outside of salt-boxes. From these 608 men would be formed boarders, sail trimmers and firemen, allowing the serving of one side while all these tasks were undertaken, or both sides if all gun crew dedicated solely to gunnery.
