The same goes for Hat Island, Las Tortugas or Little River, but for nationals they will have to sail back to La Navasse (or whatever freeport) after every time they need to do something else in the game like craft or haul or participate in RvR. And in the case of Pirates, they might as well sail to Jamaica straight from Inagua.

Before they removed Vieques as freetown and moved Ile-a-Vache to La Navasse, Britain used to be the only nation that didn't have a freetown conveniently close to the capital for gankers. Now Britain is no worse off than any other nation when it comes to distance from freetowns, but there are of course juicier and easier targets at KPR to entice more gankers to go there. But with the removal of teleports, nobody will be able to just teleport to La Navasse to go on a gank-trip anymore.

I haven't used http://burningsail.com/ in almost a year. I miss it. It used to be one of the most useful sites to have on a second screen while playing Naval Action.

If I understand correctly, Rookie areas are being removed with the patch. While I hope we're done with the hostility generation system, the suggestion to give higher mark rewards/production caps for smaller nations are worth exploring. Only problem will be when small nations become over-populated with econ-alts that do nothing to aid PvP or RvR.

I know. But somebody is surely going to be in the middle between a friendly town and a busy enemy port at some point, be convinced that they are closer to the friendly town, and then be proven wrong. That's going to be a powerful lesson - as it should be. I really hope we loose the GPS map-coordinates now too.

Damn, that's harsh. And I love it! Gotta look forward to when somebody thinks they're close enough to La Tortue, and accidentally teleport themselves to sit in their big Santi right at the mouth of Mortimer Town.

Having searched around with a similar purpose I recognized a lot of the songs on there. Was pleased to se a lot of Two Steps From Hell in there. But surprised not to see this one anywhere (provided it is not in one of the longer mixes you added there): Also this one:

Fleet and sunken Lead / Fleet Ship
Anolytic replied to Sir-Danger's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
I don't understand exactly what you're asking, but remember that as long as battle isn't over you need to specifically ask your fleet ships to escape battle (and wait for them to succeed) in order for them to survive. If you just leave battle after you sink, you will loose any fleet ships you still have in the fight. Unless there's a bug, you don't automatically loose all your fleet ships if your main ship is lost. It has been suggested before that you should be able to magically jump to take command of one of your fleet ships in battle, instead of being tied to your main ship. While a reasonable suggestion, with the changes that are coming and are now on testbed where you can have your loot in the cargo of your fleet ships I think that it's better without that ability. It makes it a strategic decision what formation to choose and what ship to command in a "convoy". -
Having historical nations is the origin of the problem, and also why we cannot have your solution. If all nations were equal, just different colours and names, we could put a cap on the size of the largest nations, the only drawback being some people not being able to play the same nation as their friend. However with historical nations each nation is unique, even though there is nothing that separates them apart from flag, name and starting position. That name and flag is much more than just a name, and you cannot have a mechanic that would deny a player living in England IRL to sail under the Union Jack in the game as long as that is an option. It would not work. Some population imbalance is part of the game. It is historical. It is part of the "Experience" that we buy into with this game. Britain is a large naval power that has every opportunity to rise and conquer all of the Caribbean. Danmark-Norge is not. Historically, in this period, Danmark-Norge couldn't even keep the "-Norge" part, although it was definitely a major naval power in Europe for much of the period. The problem arises when the imbalance is so great that the game is unplayable for some factions. That is why we need *some* balancing. Therefore we should have mechanics/features that encourage unaffiliated and undecided players to choose smaller nations over larger, to give smaller nations a fighting chance at sustainability. We should not however have caps that prevent players from joining the nation that they are determined to join.

I doubt if you even read my comment. My remarks were directed at those primarily British players who have claimed that the reason for Britain being a large nation while for instance Sweden and Danmark struggle with low population numbers, is because of their own recruitment and leadership influence in-game and not because the majority, by far, of new players starting up this game for the first time will look at the nation selection screen and choose Britian, knowing nothing and nobody of who is already playing in Britain and their leadership style. This argument has been used countless times to dismiss people pointing out that populations are unbalanced. Your argument about Sweden just proves my point. If there's nothing you can really do yourself to influence player numbers, then starting in a nation that naturally has comparably low rate of recruitment is risky. My challenge still stands, for British players who in the past have taken the credit both collectively and personally, to choose a small nation and make it a well populated one.

https://royal-signals.org.uk/Datasheets/SignallingFlags.php By semaphore-inspired I'm not talking about having actual semaphore flags in-game, or have to type out words in morse code. I'm talking about having certain predefined messages we can choose from a list to send out to global chat/in-game chat. Like "yes" "no", "I am stopped", "On Fire Keep Clear", "altering course to starboard" etc, inspired by these:

If you want more tactics over sprawling battles, best tip is to find a group to sail with, and develop tactics together. Communication opportunities isn't the problem in my experience, people knowing each other and adhering to the instructions given is the key. The game doesn't discriminate for fleet commanders. And I don't think that it would work unless you tie it to group leadership or make a feature for flag purchaser/hostility champion to select his team for port battles. Most battles are conducted with commands made over teamspeak, and commanders have developed the skill to give short commands in battle chat in parallell. Suggestions have previously been made to implement commander tools. I don't favour that too much. I like that we use pen and paper, so-to-say, or Paint/similar software more commonly, to develop strategies before battles, and that we are somewhat constrained in our tactical development during a battle. And also that the game doesn't allow commanders to handhold each player and micromanage so individual action becomes irrelevant. However I think it would be fitting, and possibly useful to some, with a simple semaphore-inspired command-system similar to what you are proposing. Though even more urgently, now with the removal of Global- and All- chat, we need a semaphore-inspired system to allow us to hail and salute enemy players before and after battles.

Strictly on topic: This is the opportunity for all the players who made the claim-ad nauseam-every time nation imbalances were brought up, that small nations were struggling with numbers simply and only because of their players or leaders being less welcoming and hospitable to newcomers and driving players away from their nations, and thus personally responsible for the population imbalances. Now is the time to put your money where your mouth is. Prove your point. Choose your nation. Show that you can make a historically small nation rival Britain in population numbers simply with your superior interpersonal skills.

Moderator Problems
Anolytic replied to Captain Pickle's topic in Forum and website problems and improvements
As you are a completely new member, your first five or so posts (in most subforums) are subject to pre-moderation. Are you sure that your posts were deleted and not that they haven't yet been okay'd by a moderator? And even if your posts were screened in pre-moderation, while similar posts were not deleted, it is understandable that something that is "on the line" from a new member would not be greenlit by a moderator in premoderator, while it might not be considered sufficiently noteworthy that it would be actively deleted coming from a more veteran user. Also, your username might not be the best choice if you wish your comments to be heard. -
The Danish haven't made any alliances for after the wipe. All we wanted when there was still the likely possibility that we would keep current politics system after wipe, was to make sure that everyone agreed to break up the Eastern Alliance and to not form new mega-alliances. Both so we could instead try a much more dynamic 3-block or 4-block system and to make sure that the players intending to play Brits, Dutch or US on the EU server would not suffer for no fault of their own from the conflicts that have solidified on the current PvP1-server. Like I told the Spanish, Danes and Swedes being on opposite sides was not out of the question if balance demanded it, even though it will hugely disadvantage both of us with our two small capitals being so stupidly close to each other. A bit early to be salty about post-wipe stuff, isn't it?
-
Unless we can ask everyone who is going to play after the wipe where they will go, which we certainly cannot, we can never get a full picture to make an informed decision to balance the nations. To begin with that is going to be a greater issue on the global server than the EU server I predict. And yet all the clans there who once talked valiant words about planning to switch around to balance nations after the wipe are now most of them indicating that they will be reneging on that. However, unless devs change the nation selection info and also introduce mechanics and information that will encourage new players to choose smaller nations, then we are soon enough going to be back to the same imbalance on both servers no matter what we decide on now between ourselves. No brit, Dutch or US captain is going to tell the fresh midshipman who just signed up for his nation that "pssst! You should recreate your character as a swede or dane now while you have the chance and nothing to loose. They really need your help, and you will have more fun with a challenge."

Not sure making the list editable by anyone is going to work out so great. I would suggest making only a few people able to add to the list, and let the rest write in this topic if they want their numbers counted. As far as RDNN is concerned there's probably no question where @Cornelis Tromp is going to go, but as a clan we're committed to our friends and allies, not to a server name or location. I have no numbers for you. We probably have players who will make their focus either server. It is a fine idea to get some sense of idea of who of the old guard will be playing on the EU server, and I already have a bit of an overview from talking to various people. But a list in the forum like this is always going to be way off, especially since very many of the groups who will be going to the EU server are either not very active in the National News forums, or don't use English that much. The great thing I see about the wipe and server split is that we can start fresh from day one, and let go of the past. But then I see people who want to make plans and decisions, and meetings and charts, to decide what is going to happen after the servers are launched, and I don't really get why this is a benefit to any of us.

Lets try and improve NA's Player numbers
Anolytic replied to PowderMonkey's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
The game is in alpha, wipes are what we signed up for. Yeah, maybe devs should just have wiped when they were ready, and not given us such long notice about it, but surely we would have been complaining and raving then as well. @ OP: I too hope many will come back. And with good fortune we will also have an influx of new players to the game. I've seen the devs state that they could do some advertising and a steam discount after the wipe.-

Powder Monkeys vs. Magazine Access
Anolytic replied to _Masterviolin's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
I guess Magazine access is for when you want to stack them, or when you want a fireship. It's not improved magazine though, it's improved magazine access. Makes sense that the trade off is a higher likelyhood that something could catch fire.
