  1. The British were beating the French in single-ship combat for a century before the revolution. I can only think of two cases where a Frigate duel ended in the destruction or capture of the British vessel. (If there are more, I would love to learn about them.)
  2. You are complaining about a color change. Literally meaningless. This is game development, not Barbie with sailor accessories.
  3. Point is, your hands-off suggestion will either handicap players when they go to set sail, or let them enjoy full-efficiency sailhandling for free, with the crew still manning the guns. It would be better all around just to make some closer management of crew assignments possible. That would solve the problem.
  4. Good suggestion. Lower sail settings could reduce the sailing requirement. But to be devil's advocate: When you wanted to make sail again, you would be enjoying full efficiency at setting sail with your crew still reduced. So that's like getting something for free.
  5. That would be an annoying sound, but we should definitely be able to SEE the pumps working. Streams of water coming out of the scuppers to indicate the threat of flooding.
  6. Waste of writing and testing a bunch of new code that won't be used in the finished game.
  7. Supposedly one of Nelson's subordinates fell over dead after a near miss from a shot. Physicians generally believed that cannon shot could break bones and kill people without a mark. Of course, they also believed in spontaneous combustion and death from drinking cold water. Even if a fatality like this was recorded in an authoritative way, the victim's body would have been tossed overboard before it could be examined. And there are plenty of logical explanations, including concussion or simple heart attack.
  8. Like what? Someone needs to do the math. They don't want us to test the ships, they want to test how 1-dura ships are used.
  9. Yikes. I wonder whether splinters are being properly tied to the point of penetration, or if they propagate along the entire path of the ball. Two things to keep in mind: When the ball exits the opposite side of the ship, there are no splinters. Only the exit hole generates dangerous splinters. The shockwave from a near-miss is a hilarious legend and obviously false.
  10. Laudanum isn't even a drug that has a widespread problem of abuse anymore. It's a historical medicine and--unlike slavery--not inherently immoral. Can we move on, please?
  11. FFS, this patch contains several great features for PvE and solo players. Now you have all sort of delivery quest content if you want to spend your time trading, more options for specialization if you want to sell ships on the market, more variety for making prizes of AI on the OW...
  12. Dang, it's hard to think of things that aren't situational at all. Can't even reference many components of the ship, in case your vessel doesn't have a quarterdeck. But in the meantime let's not suggest things that don't use period terminology.

  14. Could even provide a free perk or officer XP. And much better than bottles because it can't be farmed AFK.
  15. Could be an option on other ships as well. Privateers like Lynx often carried a long gun on a swiveling carriage, and HMS Shannon employed a light gun like this for targeting the enemy's wheel.
  16. +1 We are DEAD, so why the "realistic" requirement to sail back to an outpost on a free(!) cutter?
  17. The traverse limits are already at the historical maximum, IIRC. Many ships would have had narrower fire arcs, especially for carronades.
  18. Port battles are fine, most of the time. There's no call to trash the game on false pretenses, just because in your own limited experience some people were shooting chainshot at hulls. RvR has collapsed on PvP2 because one faction has all the power. Of course you will see some lackluster competition. The constant complaining is not constructive, especially when plenty of good port battles are going on elsewhere.
  19. Whaling isn't controversial or politically incorrect, FFS. Did no one notice how we just had a major Hollywood blockbuster about whaling? There's no whaling in this game because it would require a huge feature suite that has nothing to do with naval combat. Maybe the devs used controversy as an excuse because some people can't take 'it's an enormous off-topic pain in the ass' as an answer for why it won't be developed.
  20. *cough* PvP2 *cough* *best server ever* coughcough***
