How to possibly fix "sail-spam"
DeRuyter replied to TheJRT's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
If you search I believe there are other threads with concerns about "sail spam". So I think you'll find many others share your concern. Typically square rigged ships would stop by "heaving to" (counter balancing the force of the wind so as to come to a stop) and not by completely furling all sails. This would be even harder to do in a fore and aft rigged ship like the privateer. There are a number of ways that ships maneuvered and changed their speed during battle, but completely furling and then setting sail is not one of them. -
Depth of field in Naval Action. Yes or no?
DeRuyter replied to Ned Loe's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Interesting concepts and ideas, but I my comment at this point would be that it should be far down on the development/coding priority list. -
Well Doogerie it sounds like you have a good connection to the sea! I used to crew on the tall ship Kalmar Nyckel (featured in the replica ship thread). I have sailed on a variety of lake and inshore dinghies; Thistles, Flying Scots, Hobie cats, Lasers, etc. I use to race Thistles for a sailing club on the Delaware river. I have done some sailing in the BVI off Tortola as well, soon to be part of the OW!

Sailor's Nightmare: A Lee Shore
DeRuyter replied to Testudo Aubreii's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
If one modeled this we'd need individual sail controls so we could furl the main course and brail up the mizzen when on a run, thus avoiding the lubberly behavior! -
+1 Great post Flip !

Open World- Game Modes
DeRuyter replied to Jeremiah O'Brien's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Well I am going to defend WT here because that system works for the most part as it is a closed area game and "realism" is the differentiator. Also the player base is large enough to support it. The simulator mode with no ID tags, no aim assistance and only 1st person (commander) view is awesome (IMO), but some players want to just go in on Arcade and blast stuff which is good for grinding experience as well. I think it is important to note that in WT PVE & PVP are combined. Just don't get tunnel vision shooting at bots! Given the stage that NA is in single server is the way to go, but as someone suggested the world will be large enough for both PVE and PVP experiences. I think the issue for the Devs is whether a "hard" mode only will generate sufficient player base for a sustainable OW. -
Ok - I have to vent about the Charleston harbor scenes (Ep.8 I think?). Anybody notice something odd about the "patrol ships"? Not only are they designs from a much later period than the setting of the show (1715 ish), but they appear to have forgotten to put their ballast in and look as if they are riding on top of the water rather than in it!! Odd considering every other ship in the show looks to be patterned after late 17th century galleons (loosely of course). Worse that Saxon cavalry wearing 16th century Spanish burgonets in "Vikings"! BTW - I think there is some confusion over Lady Hamilton as the one made famous through Nelson wasn't born yet. Not saying there may not be a historical basis for the one in the show though.

User Interface Ideas (Updated 3.20.15)
DeRuyter replied to theSpatchula's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
This ^^ I would vote for the top down gun deck view! I am always confusing which button is port and which is starboard and which deck is which! As for the damage cameras and text, just go to the WT forums and you'll see that not everyone likes it, especially the Simulator battle players. Also an argument for removing the name tags over the ships. In WT SB you need to know the silhouette of the enemy vehicles and look through your binos to see if you have knocked them out (unless on fire, ammo racked, etc.). So in NA you'd have to rely on the flags and when enough ships are in the game the type or class of ship. -
Statistics - what do you want us to track
DeRuyter replied to admin's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
Good ideas. +1 to exclude K/D ratio and other competitive stats (XVM anyone?). Not sure I see the relevance of total hours/time played though. That could lead to the same sort of prejudice as the competitive stats. I like the real world measures: assets and achievements. I think the number of battles and encounters also plays a role in determining player experience. -
^^ I agree with Prater on this one - capturing a larger ship could be a ticket to a better command. Also it was expected that a British frigate captain would fight and beat a larger French frigate! This may work itself out in the OW as a SOL may not want to fire on a privateer schooner with bigger targets nearby or even not want to waste the powder, especially if a captain has to buy it himself!

Setting aside the specific arguments for/against USS Ohio what Alex said bears remembering - let's not go down the WOT road of more and more "paper" tigers, etc. Plenty to choose from without artificially throwing something in for "balance", or because it's "kewl"!

I think it is important to point out as the OP noted that "hull speed" is the potential maximum speed and just guessing I would say that many ships in the 18th c. rarely ever attained it. Just looking at the chart you will note that the USS Niagara is the only ship listed with a sharp clipper style hull shape, although I would still question how she exceeded hull speed with a displacement hull (ie not a modern racing dingy designed to plane on a reach). Be that as it may I'd rather be onboard one of the other ships in heavy weather on the open ocean.

Actually those prices are quite reasonable for museum quality ship models, the sailing ships anyway. Custom made museum quality models can run easily over $10k.

Yes - privateers who ran the blockade in fast schooners.

Current Repair system adjustment
DeRuyter replied to Crankey's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
+1 This is a pet peeve of mine (fingers crossed the repair kit system is radically changed for OW). The majority of rigging repairs during battle should be limited to splicing sail control lines or jury rigging a sail here and there. Even then look at the example of Constitution v Java. Constitution sailed a distance off to make repairs to her rigging before moving back into a raking position to accept the surrender. However when she collided with her sister ship President she had to put into port to fix her damaged bow and bowsprit. Currently you can magically fix a snapped bowsprit if you choose to repair your rigging. Similarly before the Nile the British fleet was caught in a storm and Nelson's flagship HMS Vanguard lost her top masts. Nelson had to put into port to repair the damage. As noted above ships routinely sent up and down t'gallant masts, royals and even top masts, especially before a storm, but not an operation to undertake in the middle of battle. Replacing sails (bending on sail) also can be a large operation depending on the sail. I have done this and you basically get 5-10 sailors out on the yard, plus a deck crew to send up the sail. Not bad if you are not also trying to fire guns and maneuver the ship! -
Cannon range and damage guide?
DeRuyter replied to Cookie_Monster's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
I am confused carronades have a listed max doubleshot range of 175, but long guns have no max listed. Double shot should be effective only to pistol shot range - 50-100 yards for any cannon. -
I got the connection error too. (7:15 PM ET) Everything on my end working fine.

I was in the middle of a game yesterday and this (editing?) screen popped up. I lost all keyboard control and could not exit from the screen. I closed the program and sent a bug report, but I wanted to post the screen shot in case this has happened to anyone else.

From the album: Screen shots
Some type of editing screen popped up and I could not control my ship -
Ramming - why so serious?
DeRuyter replied to MATANZA's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
Two points on this topic that are obscured by the rhetoric which bear mentioning: 1. Ramming vs. Collisions Everyone simply says ram but really we are talking about two different actions. Collisions are part of battle and usually are accidental, two teammates near each other focused on firing, or misjudging going behind another ship, etc. It may be intentional when you want to board for example, but the goal is not to sink the enemy ship by this action. Ramming is a deliberate action/tactic to severely damage/sink the enemy vessel. While it was used in other eras, ancient galley warfare, 16th c. galley warfare, or with the introduction of ironclads in the ACW, ramming was not used as a general naval tactic in the age of sail (not saying it was never tried in a specific circumstance). 2. Fouling or Entanglement This is not modeled in game (yet?). In addition to the damage to the hull and rigging in many collisions the ships rigging entangled or fouled and both ships were stuck until they could be cut away. This happened in the Constitution v Guerriere fight with the end result the more of Guerriere's masts came down when the ships parted. In addition debris is not modeled either so no one has to cut away the damaged rigging from their bow after a collision/ram. Another point is that with the current repair system you can fix parts of the rigging that would require a shipyard to fix. Constitution collided with the President and had to put in to port for a major reconstruction of her bow afterwards. We see ramming because of the area style alpha battles we are playing now. I am not surprised given what I saw in WoT (jeez why didn't they teach us ramming in armor school!?!). I am sure these tactics will change as the new damage model and OW comes online. -
I have sailed on a replica of a ship built in 1625 and I would agree that ships before the early 18th c. (1710-1720) should be left out. Having said that I do agree that the early ships are beautiful and it is a shame to leave out the Dutch Golden Age. The differences in rigging and sail plan are more than meets the eye. The shape and size of individual sails changed and there was refinement of sail handling lines. Most importantly was the adoption of staysails and jibs, which allowed for much better upwind sailing and maneuver. Hull shape and design also changed, which again effected performance. I'd rather not see a WoT like tier system just to have a broader time frame of ships in the game that just opens another can of worms.
