If You Care About Realism...
maturin replied to Ratline's topic in Current Feature Improvement Suggestions
No, it's because of some incredibly stupid engine limitation in Unity, regarding number of instances active simultaneously. Sounds like something that could be worked around, but I suspect the devs aren't too motivated to bring them back because the community did nothing but bitch and moan about big waves make it hard to aim. -
Given that the French wanted to resort to nuclear weapons before the Americans got involved, I rather doubt that... One-sided on the battlefield, maybe. Doesn't do much to help the 10-20,000 South Korean civilians that die in the first few hours of Seoul being flattened by conventional artillery (disregarding chemical weapons). Plus the huge famine in the North a few months later.

Current Ships in Development Update?
maturin replied to Fluffy Fishy's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
Oh man, you should not be unsure about the Prince. Nevermind whether she's beauty or ugly, she brings an unprecedented amount of firepower to the shallow-water fore-and-aft game. It would actually expand the possibilities of the light ship hunting playstyle in a big way, and become one of the most popular vessels. Compared to Prince, the other vessels are just a pretty face. -
That couldn't be farther from the truth. Entire fleets would aim at the enemy's rigging with the express purpose of taking down masts with repeated 'lucky shots'. Most shot would hit nothing but air, but probability would guarantee at least some hits. It's hard to imagine pointing a gun at a particular part of a particular mast with a confident expectation of success, except at the closest ranges and in the calmest seas. However, that doesn't mean that gunners did not aim carefully at certain points in the rigging (such as the topmast cast on the downroll) to maximize their chances. It's like trying to drop a mortar round into a slit trench. The target is so small and the precision of the weapon is so low that you can never rely on a hit with a given round. But you still do the math so that a theoretically perfect shot will hit. Also, chase guns were employed in the hope that a lucky shot would knock away an important spar. Spars are not trivial pieces of timber, so this tells you that individual shot can seriously threaten topmasts and topgallantmasts (which almost never come down in-game).

What? What the heck is your ethnicity???

Yeah, because every pirate movie or TV show before Black Sails has had gay characters in it. /rolleyes What a predictable complaint, coming from you. Percentage of gay/bi women is waaaaaaay more than 2%, by the way.

Spanker/headsail control and dynamic weather/lee helm would make battle maneuvers incredibly taxing and overwhelming. Gusts and wind shifts are a feature that would revolutionize the chasing part of the game, but could be safely ignored in the heat of battle when half a knot is not so critical. -
Just increase the damage requirement to lock an opponent in battle, so chasers aren't magical tractor beams. Then increase the leave timer accordingly.

BAE Systems to upgrade US Navy's Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Vicksburg
maturin replied to Nathan Marcus's topic in Tavern
/facepalm Why are they even developing (non-rail) guns anymore? Just slap a GPS-guided MLRS on the deck and call it good. Pretty sure the guidance systems are a loooot cheaper when the projectile doesn't have to withstand so many Gs. -

2 Questions....Maybe 3...or
maturin replied to Tacticus's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
The salt is strong with this one. I speak Russian and I have read the devs' RU forum posts for years. They post on the English boards more often by a factor of 2 or 3. If anything it's the Russian members of the community that have reason to complain. Numerous gameplay announcements and patch notes were never posted in the Russian forum at all, and needed to be translated by volunteers. Shared threads such as the ship poll are in English only, no Russian anywhere. The Testing forum is entirely English. Bad advice. -
Where's the dirt come from? Volcanoes? Splinter decals during battle is a good idea, if it's practical given the size of the objects,

Sail configuration for turning thru the wind
maturin replied to Farrago's question in Feature proposals and Gameplay Help Q&A
To be clear, you never tack with auto sails on. If you want to preserve speed, you should tack historically. Don't use your manual sails until the nose of your ship is pointed dead upwind.- 9 replies

If you can't catch a square rigged trader without bow chasers, you still haven't learned how to properly set up an OW tag. You need to start your battle within the zone of control. Tbrigs and Tsnows are utterly helpless against anything slightly faster than them on the OW. Use Mercury or Niagara. I agree that the aggressive exit timers make it extremely hard to catch a Cutter or Lynx. Even bow chasers often don't help you there. Here's hoping we get Prince de Neufchatel soon.

Don't sail a slow vessel like a snow and expect to catch things.
