Flaank Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I was taking on a Trader Snow with my Basic Cutter. After a fair while I had the NPC down to less sailors than me. We played the boarding game which I won with 2 sailors remaining. I didn't get any loot nor the Trader Snow and in fact spawned back into the nearest Port. What did i do wrong?
Joe Spivey Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 My guess woulkd be that you didn't have enough sailors left to work the ship.
Deepgift Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 From what it sounds you killed all the crew on the trader ship, but you did not do it thought boarding. ie a final round of grape shot to kill the last few crew. and when you kill a ship in this way you need to capture it by hitting x to receive the loot and the ship.

You sure about this? I'm pretty sure we graped a Cutter to 0 crew and we still got the ship when battle ended. Who gets the ship is based on who did the most damage IIRC. But should be no need to "manually" board it using the G key after battle is shown as ended. Can someone verify this ?

Hethwill, the Red Duke Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 You need enough crew for the capture after a successful boarding. Has been like this forever. Graping down to zero crew will leave the ship open for capture which ( read above ) if no one captures it and everyone exit the battle goes to the captain with enough crew that was closer to the ship ( theory, we've been testing this during our interdiction but seems to be that way as opposite to damage ).
DazednConfused Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Yeah if you have less than 5 crew it sometimes auto surrenders you. Most of the time you can see this when somebody's ship explodes beside yours. So in fact the game thought you lost - thereby taking your prize away. Aim to have 50% more crew than your enemy before boarding, pick fire muskets immediately, then once the countdown hits 1 switch to attack. rinse repeat 1
Hethwill, the Red Duke Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Also Morale cannot reach ZERO. Or else... it all ends...
Admiral 8Q Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 You didn't do anything wrong. You died. Do you expect to be able to crew a cutter and a snow with 1 crewman each?I learned the hard way not to try and capture a snow in a cutter. Even two of us in cutters tried and failed. Just sink it next time.Cheers!

I've captured many a trader snow in a cutter, it only has left and right facing top guns so you either stay ahead of their firing arc on the bow or you strafe its butt all day. Now if you're talking a normal snow then yeah it's gonna be a tad more challenging. Also I've claimed traders that I've graped to 0 without catching them.
Matsje van Leeuwenhoek Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Watch this video. He does exactly what you need to do. Once you get the rhythm down, it'll be like a lightning bolt and it'll all make sense http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/9490-war-with-spain/page-2

I was sailing in a Snow and my friend in a Privateer really, really wanted to capture a Snow for himself. First battle he was almost sunk while trying to get alongside. We sank that Snow, and later found another Snow. Second battle he was almost sunk again while trying to get alongside. We sank the 2nd Snow and then found a third Snow an hour or so later. While the battle timer was counting down I asked him "Are you going to try to capture this one?" He replied, with his French accent; "Fuck no, I don't want to capture it. I want to sink this bastard!" Guess he learned the hard way how rough the Snow can be against smaller ships
