Just curious why the option for Ships Flags in Open World is turned off.

 

I think i would be great that all "player" ships had their flags on at all time. This would make it easier to see difference between the player ships and the NPC ships.

 

Besides that...it just looks so much better with the flags and gives another atmosphere.

 

Just something simple as below to help us see the player ships from the AI ships and their faction :)

no but there should be.....bring a little life to the open world....

 

Also should be able to use the telescope and manual sails in the open world :)

Definitely - Flags shown along with the spyglass, so we can catch hostile ships from afar, without having to pull off near pixel perfect clicking.

+1 for the spyglass as well, but it has its own thread.

During this QA (http://www.twitch.tv/braincage/v/39127630) it was mentioned that spyglasses might be incorporated later on, but the detail of the ship won't be as nice as what you see during sea battles. If the community is OK with that, then it might be added in.

Regarding flags, the QA also mentions that custom flags might be available, but what I think is a neat feature, you'll get flags for ships sunk. So when looking out an opponent, depending on how many flags are flying, you'll get a sense of their experience.

Here's my +1 for flags.

 

Anything that adds to imertion without having to rely on "artificial" UI elements gets my vote, but I'm an old fashioned role player at heart so I'm biased.

I have to agree with Badger. I wouldn't mind era appropriate or flags that match the atmosphere of the game but I got no use for free for all player designed flags. Same for hull painting on ships. One of the lamest things in POTBS was all the neon pink and crap ships and such. I just down grades the feel of the game and no matter how true to the ideal you might be there will be others who aren't. You can't control it and never will. So I'm good without all that player customization crap.

The lack of flags in the OW is/was a concession to preserve fps and performance. That is also the reason the ships do not have visible crew in the OW and lack some detail compared to the full models in a combat instance.

I would hate to think that the game is already bottlenecked. If theres a concern that there will be issues with FPS and perfomance issues by adding flags to the OW...what does that say about future content ideas to the open world. I seriously hope this game doesnt turn into instance after instance to keep perfomance.

That's not really the case but things like flags flapping in the wind, especially if you have 100 ships in an area (AI and player), can take a toll. This is also why it's hard to have dynamic sails flapping around. If the game can handle it once everything else is finished i'm sure they will consider adding some elements like this but no guarantees
