What do you all think of the Cerberus? The wiki doesn't paint it in a good light. What's its strengths and weaknesses? Is it a worthy upgrade from Mercuary and snow?

its fast going strait but turns like a brick.. decent Armour if you can find the right type 12.8kn is the fast ive seen it going in battle.  one thing that does bother me is its aft guns. they are so close the water line that 50% of time i shoot they end up killing fish....

I find it a bit underwhelming actually. No particular strengths, no particular weaknesses, armored a bit on the light side, and as mentioned above, the stern guns are useless 50% of the time and even then of so small caliber that its hardly worth installing them.

My main issue with the Cerb, the ship is so high above the waterline that its very difficult for your opponent to miss it, combined with mediocre armor it tends to take more dmg then previous ships going up against equal level opponents.

The summary is, yes, its there and hopefully I am through it soon for something better.

The biggest upside is its relatively small crew (190, versus the 240 that is more common for frigates), so its the entry point into the world of frigates. In terms of size and firepower it feels like a significant upgrade. It makes you feel like you are truly ready to square off against other frigates and engage in large battles/port battles.

But it is classified as a light frigate, so most of the other frigates have advantages over it, whether in hull strength, firepower or even speed. It's like graduating from high school and thinking you are at the top, and then going to college and becoming a freshman again. In that Mercury/Snow you felt like the king of the 6th rate world. When you get a Cerberus you are entering a whole new world at the bottom.

One thing I find annoying about it, is that once the rear armor is gone it loses some maneuverability and its stern really sinks into the water. The rear facing cannons then become virtually unusable.

My worst experiences in a Cerberus however have been of my own making. Making that transition from a Mercury or Snow to a Cerberus means planning a few more steps ahead because its not a sixth rate or a cutter, it doesn't turn on a dime. I had some early battles in a Cerberus where I had to relearn how to fight and I fought poorly during the transition.

A decent hull strength (Oak or better) is very much a good idea, but just as important is turning upgrades in a Cerberus.

Final thought, don't get into fights with PC Yachts, Cutters and other small vessels. They will constantly outturn you and hang onto your stern. They may not be able to sink you but its surprising how hard it can be to sink them if the other player has any skill at all. When you finally get into a frigate and find yourself getting super frustrated fighting some small boat, it's a real hit to your ego.

Before the wipe i had an exceptional level cerberus with some turning rate and gunnery mods and I did pretty well with it. I didnt need another ship untill i crafted a frigate.

Yeah despite folks saying it was rubbish I really had a lot of success with it and grew to really like the Cerberus. It does take a bit of getting used to after Brigs and Merc's, you really need to use manual sails to get it to dance and plan your moves more but I found it to be rewarding. It can be brutal with its 32lb carronades and with planking and live oak hull it can take a beating so is good for doing missions. Sailing into the middle of some npc's and letting rip with both broadsides is very satisfying. It is a bit of a brick though when set up like that, you won't be getting places as fast as with previous ships.

I like the cerberus, it is not like any other ship which is fine by me and I have no complaint. I have been using a cerberus for the last 3 days in the missions at my rank, by myself, and never lost a ship so it can not be a terrible ship, it just does its job.

You bring up the other big thing. Once you get to ships of this size, you really want to learn how to manually tack. Prior to this, its possible to dodge that in many cases. But once you get in a Cerberus your ship is going to be going to be sailing backwards or coming to a complete stop a lot when you try to make those turns through the wind, unless you learn how to tack using manual sails.

Mine was just Fir, and it didnt really do anything to help the ship.  Granted this was a NPC bought one.

Overall, the guns are terrific compared to its predecessors... but the other traits are highly lacking.

Cerberus is a tank, and as such needs to be used as a tank.

People like to give it rudders and such to make it less of a mammoth to move. Instead just bump up it's strengths; give it extra planking, and an extra pump and an oak Cerberus can shrug off multiple broadsides from constitutions before even considering going into survival mode..

However, it is horribly outclassed by it's sister frigates in terms of manoeuvrability, firepower and speed, and therefore it's role is really brig destroyer and below. Gameplay wise it will pretty much guarantee a decisive victory against low level opponents if it has sufficient brig and cutter support, but in terms of frigate versus frigate the cerb's really just a support vessel.

That's just my opinion though
