Help with capturing ships. Bug or screw-up?

Okay, this has happened to me twice now. I've spent ages wearing down the sails and crew on a ship, then I lose it.

 

The first time was probably due to the dumb AI that got pulled into the battle with me because they wouldn't stop shooting, almost sinking both of us while I was boarding.

 

The second time happened just now. I decided to hire a Cutter to make my life easier. Here's what happened:

 

1) Order Cutter to de-mast the Privateer.

 

2) Bring the sails down to under 50% with chains.

 

3) Use my mobility advantage to grape shot the crew while Cutter is still trying to de-mast. He's a crap shot but he's a distraction.

 

4) Prep for boarding, then board.

 

5) Boarding got interrupted. No biggie, grape was reloaded.

 

6) Quick broadside wiped out the remaining crew.

 

7) Option to capture (X) comes up and I don't do it because I never do and I still get the ship at the results screen.

 

8) Get to results screen, no ship.

 

This has only ever happened when AI (other than the ship I'm attacking) is involved. As I understand it, pressing X after you've killed the crew simply transfers you to the new ship, whereas just leaving the battle will give you the option to send it to an outpost once you're at the results screen.

 

WTF am I missing? Did I screw up or have I stumbled across a bug? I just spent the better part of 45 minutes wearing down this Privateer so that I could finally have a better ship. Not happy.

are you sure the battle was over and you didn't just leave 2 minutes after you captured a ship? You can't keep your prizes as long as the battle is still going on. Also if you kill it by grapeshot and not boarding the ship will go to the player or ai that did the most hull damage to it, if you want the ship board it or capture it with x after decrewing to 0

That's gotta be it. Damn. So close to getting a better ship
