I just leveled up to a higher rank can have 60crew and captured a Privateer ship but i find out that the missions won't bring me enough to lvl as fast as before. Missions give me 2000 gold and 50 XP but to repair the ship after a battle (in a port) takes about 1400 gold. So the income got slower. What should i do to get more gold? Is it worth to do missions or there is a better moneymaking activity other then trading?

when doing missions you get the xp and gold for damage you did.

2000 plus the gold you got for your dmge. thats in your lvl range about another 1000g or more.

Trading is extremely profitable if you manage to find a good traderoute.

Other than that dmge is the only way of income

Can always capture trader ships and sell them. Also you increase in level the missions get harder which increases the damage you do and increases your overall experience. Don't forget that in addition to the 2k gold and 50 XP you get the gold and XP from the battle as well.

It would be great to make the missions more profitable. With trading ofc you can get a lot of money but with this the game forces you to do some trading sooner or later or your progress slows down. Upgrades for the ship costs a lot and the Privateer ship isn't better then the basic cutter which takes 0 gold to repair. So why should I get a better ship in that low lvl? I feel the game is forces to do borring activities for just a little fun to get in the end.

I think the cutter is viable until you get past lvl 4, could be wrong tho.

Lvl 3 missions require a Brig or Snow to be most effective though can be done in a Cutter if you try.

Capturing trade ships can yield very nice profits. I once captured a a trader snow with a load of compass wood: 30.000 gold. Got a blue upgrade: another 20.000 gold. Sold the snow plus the gold for the fight: another 5.000.

I have the same problem as you.

I completely disagree, I never traded a thing, I hit rank 3 just from mostly doing small battles and had enough gold to buy a Snow and still had 60k left. Once I got the Snow I was raking in the gold just by doing damage in Missions and selling the occasional upgrades I looted.

I play quite casually and I am halfway through rank 4, I still haven't traded anything or sold any resources from captured ships, yet I still have 140k gold, bought a Snow, a Mercury and an extra Niagara ( used it to to sail south and make a new outpost to hunt spanish and french ships on the Gold Coast ).

So,just through sinking ships I am making plenty of gold. By the time I hit rank 5 I will have plenty of gold left after buying and equipping a Cerberus. The bigger your ships get, the bigger the ships get, the more damage you will be doing and to bigger ships, which means even more gold.

So yeah, I am not rich by any means, but I am earning enough to buy ships and have gold to fall back on.

Also, sorry for double post, but when you capture a Traders ship, if you right click it in the loot screen and choose Take Command, you will swap to that ship and can carry all of its cargo, then your old ship will appear at the bottom which you right click and choose Send to Outpost. So your ship gets sent to outpost and you sail the trader ship full of cargo back to the outpost.

If you choose take comand you can load captured ship and then change again to your own ship? The problem is if im far from my outpost and I want to continue privateing I want to do that with my own ship.

Last I checked it didn't work that way, if you want all of the cargo you have to sail it back yourself. They might have changed it I don't know. But considering the profit from the cargo it can be worth it.

If you want to hunt traders I suggest you sail to a Free Town that is close to enemy ports and make an outpost there, you shouldn't have to sail far to find a target and thus sailing the trader back wont take as long either.

Take command of the Trader ship, load ALL the cargo into the ship.

Send your fighting ship to out post

sail the trader to the outpost and get back in your fighting ship
