Why is it that other ships can hit me but my frickin targeting lines won't show me hitting them...is there a way to aim or something..this game is not anywhere near as good as I thought it would be. They need in game tutorials and a UI that isn't crap.

The devs have stated that the UI is placeholder, I dont mind it it is simple and functional.

As for your aiming take a look at this video

Or you could be using the wrong keys to try and aim http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/1964-keyboard-shortcuts-list/

Its found in the guide section of the fours, there is a ton of helpful information for new players there.

You adjust your aim with your mouse, the red bar shows the general direction your shots will go and the elevation of your shots.

The AI puts rounds into the water around me all the time.  Their favorite thing to do in small ships, in fact, is to bury their broadside into a wave.  ;)

They do hit pretty often, but I guarantee you, not as often as an experienced player.  The number of people utterly missing my hull during a small battle yesterday while I was able to skip the ranging shot and hammer theirs with a full broadside definitely shows the difference between experienced players and those still coming up the curve.

In short, practice.  Watch carefully, and remember the arcs on your shots.  Before long, you'll be hammering anything inside of 250yds without effort.

Like Sir Henry said, I've seen plenty of AI opponents do that. It'll change once I start commanding ships with higher freeboards and gundecks, but for now I find a lot of fun in using the swells to my advantage. You can literally pop up and put an aimed (aka manual with the spacebar) broadside into them, then drop back down again. Another thing to try is letting them have the weather gauge. They might heel so badly that they can't even elevate their guns to hit you. When they finally get there, they shoot into a passing swell or wave!

I've too noticed that they tend to have a more accurate initial broadside. They turn fairly quick and get that advantage, but I normally close rather quickly and start putting my iron into them and odds change quickly.

The skill level of the AI also makes for a massive difference. A Junior Lt. on a Navy Brig will waste most of his shots into the sea. A Flag Captain OTOH is a bloody sniper.
