Carronades are better for low levels because they just shred opposing ships, resulting in a quicker victory. Small ships also are faster and more maneuverable, which allows you to get next to your enemy, which is the prime range for the guns.

if you are new to the game go carronades to begin with. As you face more experienced foes, having carronades can be suicide unless you group with people who have meds or longs.

The reason for this is an experienced player can zoom in on your ship, see the carronades, and then procede to stay out of your range while sniping you. It isn't fun the first time it happens to you.

While you are inexperienced the carronades 'give more bang for your buck' as it's less likely you will land all your shots when new - evening out the exp difference gained with smaller, but more accurate long guns.

I would choose medium guns actually

  • more damage
  • faster reload

unless you plan to pvp a lot, then long guns are better in case of running, chasing.

Carronades are great against similar class or lower level ships.

Actually. Thinking about it. i would still choose long guns - slower reload but useful in all situations..

PS Carronades are being improved by the way. They will perform better at close range in the future

Is grape shot with carronades more effective than medium or long guns?

I like to damage the opponent sails, weaken the the hull and deminish the crew before i take her as prize.

Because i noticed you get a more "crew is shocked" with grape

I prefer carronades for everything up to frigates. The reason is that the engagement rates with these small vessels are usually quite small and at close range the carronades simply do more damage than cannons.

Also carronades now seem to have improved trajectory compared to earlier builds, not limiting them to yardarm-to-yardarm fighting any more.

use medium guns they do almost the same damage, you can easily reload shock people with 3-4 hits and they reload so fast, using longs isn't worth it till you start using frigate, constitution or higher. That's where you need them for the extra range to chase down targets running away. carronades are pretty bad atm since a 32 pdr carronade only does like 15% extra dmg over a 9pdr medium. but the 9 pdr reloads like twice as fast so it's not balanced at all. not to mention the accuracy on carronades is pretty bad at range

Where did you find this?

I would not understimate medium 4 pounders against ships to the mercury. The higher reload rate compensates the less damage. More broadsides hit in less time is more prone to set the enemy in shock and is better when you are alone agains two enemies.

Before the wipe, I fought a 1v1 PvP battle in my Yacth with mediums 4 pdrs versus a Mercury and he ran without stern and the sides less of 50%. My ship was mainly intact. If I were wanted sink him I would used chain in their sails before. And I have not practice in PvP fights.

As far as I remember cannon types are like this:

Carronades: Short Range, Slower Load, Good Penetration, High Damage

Med Gun: Medium Range, Faster Load, Average Penetration, Decent Damage

Long Gun: Long Range, Slower Load, Good Penetration, Slightly Lower Damage

Mediums are the best for multiple ship battles as they give good damage and decent range, longs are also an option.

As stated above Carronades are only good in 1v1 battles where you are a faster/better sail or at low tier where ships usually sail close.

Anything above a snow with carronades is a waste in my opinion but you may be able to make it work.

I've tested out both setups and looked at the damage log, the carronades have a potential for higher damage but they very often do not penetrate + the medium guns feel like they have more damage over time with that incredible reload rate. the only good thing about carronades is it has a higher chance of putting someone in reload shock if you can aim well with it, but it's very easy to mess up an entire broadside if you don't time/aim it right, this is where medium guns are way more forgiving. Also the mediums and longs penetrate and dmg both sides at once because they have enough penetration to keep going through both sides, carronades don't. So if an enemy is shielding his weak side you are gonna be better of using mediums since you can still dmg the weak side by overpenetrating. and don't forget irl carronades were usually not used to shoot the hull because of the low penetration, it was used to sweep the decks thats why it's usually only the quarterdeck that has carronades on a ship.

If you have a fast ship, experienced can't run away and "snipe" so go for Carrons. Every time they turn for fire at you they lose distance and soon you can eat them.

However, if you do not have the faster ship on the block medium Cannons might be the way to go for new players.

Always carronades for yacht vs. yacht. Your chances of hitting those low little hulls at range are too slim. Carronades are also useful for raking brigs and Mercs (still can't manage to outmaneuver a snow).

Why weaken the hull? You'll get a reduced price for it when selling.

I just drop their sails to 50-60% and then proceed to grape the crew down at a safe distance (a trader Snow will try to board you!) until it's a won battle when I grapple them.

I realise the question was about the yacht, but with the cutter I have had more success with cannons than carronades.

Before last weekend's wipe I did several Admiralty Orders, which were basically the same battle 1 v 1 with my cutter against an AI cutter or privateer(?).

With 12lb carronades I could sink him 2 out of 3 times by trying to avoid his broadside, cross his stern and fire at close range.

Since the head start I tried the same approach and was being sunk in 2 out of 3 battles until I switched to long 6lb cannons.

I also came off worst using carronades in a PvP Small Battle against other cutters and yachts with what I think were 6lb guns.

Perhaps I've got worse or the AI gunners have improved but the carronades seem to be less effective, especially against the smaller ships.

On the in game chat yesterday "Pongo" advised me to switch from long to medium cannons to get the benefit of faster reload at the expense of range.

I thought that by weakening the hull/armor, my grape shot had more effect, especially with a snow with the most of the crew below the decks?

I go carros. Best dps in lower ships is to be along side then and pound all 6 carros into thrm with 0 chance for missing. For these small ships you fire 1 side then krisscross to the other side and fire, by the time your back on the 1st side again your reloaded and ready to go. 3 or 4 passes and they should be sinking

I thought the same until way back in Sea Trials Chustler taught me different.  I hit his ship maybe once.  He just used ball to wear down my sails and demast me.

Longs are the most versatile.  They are good in any situation, but not necessarily the best.
