So I've been using Steam for years now but I just discovered that all that inventory stuff I had accumulated, trading cards, booster packs of trading cards, could actually be sold on a community market. I had 2 full pages of cards and such that I sold for about $1.80 total, sometimes selling them as low as 1 cent a card (plus Steam Fees). That money got added to my steam wallet. That blew my mind, I got real money out of playing my games, barely pocket change but still.

I'm flummoxed by this whole concept. I've read websites, watched youtube videos, but I really want to talk to someone who actually uses that whole system. Do you accumulate cards? Trade them? Turn them into emoticons or whatever? Is there a specific thing you are interested in getting? Are you just trying to make some real money by buying low/selling high?

I'm struggling to understand the motivation behind it.

But if anyone here actively participates in the Steam Trading card system I'd love to talk about it.

As I see, cards are used to create badges, that make you level up, and what you get with the XP are more showcases for your profile, more customization options, and more friends you can have. You only get a number of cards when playing a game, the rest you need to buy or trade from other people. And every time you get an entire hand of cards, you can craft a badge, and it goes on until you hit the ``highest´´ badge.

It can either be used as you're using them, pocket change to help with the purchase of other games, or as a way to show off. I suppose Valve added it for the portion of the populace that want to show off, and aren't above spending extra money for something many don't care about.
