There are many rumors about the early access and the wipe. It will be important to have more informations, if it is possible now. We swedes are in a very bad position on the map. Alone we can't fight vs all other nations. And we have no informations about make alliances or new starting points. So we must wait and thinking about change nation or not. Are there any changes near or will we go to early access at this point of gameplay?

thx

I believe that the ports will revert to their original owners, but will again be available for conquest.

If you're having issues as the Swedes now, I expect the same will happen post-wipe.

Further, I can only suggest the American faction, as "The von Steuben Squadron" is an awesome guild name for a German-American team ;)

Well, before you gents went Swede, I did give you gents an offer to join the Dutch.

The offer is still available.

We all have respect for you and your group, and would gladly welcome and support you. You can still maintain being an independent organization within the Dutch faction, similar in how we cooperate with the Polish.  We don't boss each other around but cooperate for common goals.

Now, to answer the rest of your question, there is going to be a diplomacy feature that was mentioned by the Admin were members of the faction would vote on declarations of war and alliances, however it is on their long term plans (truthfully, they need to develop it sooner rather than later, don't like the current system of anarchy)  Here's the link: http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/7858-port-battles-roadmap-discussions/

You also need to know that Swede is the second hardest nation to start with.

For this, I think we should have some kind of guides for new players when they open the game for the first time and give them some ideas about the game.

Fury, if your clan wants to remain Sweden after the wipe, I'd suggest to your leaders to think about handling an alliance with any major force at the moment by ingame negotiations

Are alliances technically speaking worth it at all in the current stage of the game though, other than at a purely military level? I mean, with permanent war between nations it's not like one can use eachothers' harbours anyway, neither for trade or for safety, so it does make more sense to play "a faction within a faction", i.e. joining Great Britain or Netherlands and sail for them with the Swedish/Danish ports as home outposts?

I may have got it all wrong being new to the whole open world thing, but I take it that it is how it works now?

Right now, alliances are mostly on a Guild level. The "randoms" may respect agreements between the largest organized forces on each faction, but they don't always and aren't obligated too. For example, if Swedes wanted to avoid the majority of hostility from Great Britain, then they'd probably speak with the leaders of SLRN and work something out. SLRN players would then ask for GB players not to focus on fighting Sweden and those with the resources to do large port battles wouldn't be a threat to Sweden from the side of SLRN.

That said, there may be another guild, say theoretically, the British East Indies guild that wants Swedish ports for trade and ignores the alliance to attack them. There's no formal system stopping that from happening at the moment.

However, it appears that alliances between the major guilds appear to be quite effective at the moment as a placeholder for any official system.

Edit. But no, you can't currently dock at an allied nation's port, since it's not truly faction wide yet. I think Devs have talked of a voting system that may be implemented in the future to allow true faction wide diplomacy.
