On behalf of the new players joining the game in droves now and in the coming weeks, I'd like to ask the veterans here about upgrades. In general, which are your go-to upgrades? If it's ship class or role specific just say so.

I'm also trying to understand the durability side of upgrades, as it stands now. How is the game set up in that regard? Same question for permanent upgrades. If there's a good guide out there on the subject I'd appreciate being pointed toward it because a search of the forums didn't yield anything obvious.

ok jon this is my personal way of upgrades on a eny ship depending on you play style. there are 1or2 permanent upgrades i put mag acces on, and this will be lost with your ship.on the other i put powder monkeys.this is for fast loading not boarding and it helps me rank up.but like i say thats my way of killing ships.hope it helps you.

I like my Pellews sights, because I do love my long cannons. Improves accuracy and gun dispersion.

As a new player, your focus should not be about getting a high class ship with high class mods. You SHOULD be progressing at a relatively fast rate up the rank structure, so keep this in mind regarding permanent mods as they will go as quickly as they come.

In terms of non-permanent mods for a vessel it depends on your play style. Marines, Boarding Parties, Musket & Pistols, Grenade Supplements, Swordfighting Handbooks are good for boarding, Powder Monkeys, Rum Rations, Optimised Ballast, Pellew's Sights are good for shooting.

Important to note that the mods values get tweaked all the time. It's too early in game development yet to provide an answer to this question that can stand the test of posterity.

For example, boarding mods used to be the only mods that really mattered. Then all NPCs were given marines, new AI, and defense buffs, and now carrying only boarding mods is mostly a waste. Pellews and reload mods were neat for a while, but it looks like the most recent patch has nerfed reload mods.

Officers will soon be added as separate module functions, which may still change everything...

So while many can answer this question as it relates to effective mods now, those reading this thread later should abide by the contemporary state.

well done to kill a buzz!! :)

I find mods hard to understand  !   The lack of information is so annoying.      Hope in time they will change UI and add better descriptions in game.

I think reducing cannon reload time   helps the most in pve.
