Northern Limit Line (South Korea naval movie)

If you live in the US, they just added a movie to Netflix Watch Instantly called Northern Limit Line. It's about the 2002 naval battle between North and South Korea. Focuses on the action between 2 gunboats. It was created for a Korean audience so the movie is in Korean.

I'm always on the watch for naval movies and TV shows so I was surprised that I hadn't heard about this one. Therefore I thought it worth pointing out for the benefit of what seems to be a like-minded community here.

Most of the movie is character building and narrative. But you also get a good glimpse into the routine of the boat. In particular because its so small its not meant for long voyages, they scramble out of port or a floating base with more complete crew facilities. Which in itself I found interesting actually. But there are some good scenes with the gunboats at sea and the battle is short but intense, close quarters gunfight at sea.

If you are into naval movies, it's worth watching for its look at a modern close range naval gun battle, which just doesn't happen anymore in the era of cruise missiles. The combat scenes reminded me Saving Private Ryan or Black Hawk Down for their visceral bloody/gory nature.

Don't expect it to feel uplifted at the end. It's a movie about what happened to a particular ship and crew with emphasis on the human cost of war.
