Jon Allen Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 Hello, I'm new here. I haven't bought the game yet but am going to. Whether that means waiting until it appears on Steam in January or sometime this week. I actually got a steam gift card for Christmas so I'd like to use that. But that brings up a question or two. 1. The website totes that buying the Alpha version of the game now will get you the Royal Armed Yacht. I'm assuming that means once the game is on steam and you buy it there, even if the game is listed as Early Access (will it be?) that the Royal Armed Yacht perk goes away. Does that sound correct? 2. The Alpha version for sale now totes the Royal Armed Yacht as normally being a $20 value. So that has me wondering if the plan is to offer up other in-game ships for sale for real money down the line once the game is on Steam or after its released. Or if this is it, just pre-order perks that won't appear again. 3. The Royal Armed Yacht itself. How good is this ship? What role(s) are it good for? Just on its own merits. Any help with these questions is appreciated. I've been eye balling this game for quite sometime but I wanted to see it get further along before I committed. I feel like I'm ready to do that.
Captain Comery Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 There has not been a set release date yet but if you are that devoted to getting the game you can email the developers and you may get lucky. The one thing they need is feedback so if you're good at giving it your guaranteed to get in. I doubt the steam voucher will work on the game in its current state, all the more reason to email the devs. The yacht is an exclusive for alpha testers such as myself, you can get it if you join the game now. The yacht is a six gunned small vessel best used for hunting small ships and traders. It is a nice looking vessel but has little armour. The yacht will be worth a fortune when the game is released (according to the devs). You may not get much more information as topics like this get closed fast but if you really want access to the game go to the game labs website, get the email address and send an email. If you get accepted they will send a link to a purchasing website and you will have ordered your steam key. The key will be sent out in a batch every Thursday at a certain Kiev time. All you have to do then is activate your key on steam, download the game and start playing. Hope this helps.
Jon Allen Posted December 27, 2015 Author Posted December 27, 2015 Excellent help, thank you. Decided to dive in. Looks like the purchase site is available (some steam keys available). So I didn't need to email anybody. But I'm glad you covered that. The nature of my RL work will give me a lot of time to play from now through most of January. So I want to really dig into this. I know there is an impending wipe, but I'm telling myself that just means I'll get to start over and erase my inevitable mistakes.
Nathaniel Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 (edited) Yes, the "mail the devs" thing is outdated, the game is available for sale, the game population more than tripled in the last week. They seem to set out keys daily, not weakly for now if i'm not mistaken. The yacht is a fine ship but the alternative ships in the ame aren't really worse, so it's more a matter of when you like to start and if you are ready for starting over soon. There were some pretty unspecific announcments about additional premium ship coming to the game (never above frigate rank if i remember, though) but they will not be technically better than the ships you can buy in game and, taking into account that we've not heard about them for a long time, i doubt it is a prioritized feature. Ojibwa_Wind Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 U mean once this game is release we have to pay real money to buy ships in game? I thought this was a pay once and play game
Snoopy Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 U mean once this game is release we have to pay real money to buy ships in game? I thought this was a pay once and play game You don't have to but there might be premium ships in addition to the crafted ones, but other than the yacht there are none in the game so far.
BungeeLemming Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 1) yes, the yacht is a thank you for everyone buying the preorder packet. Its a special ship which you can only ever get by purcasing this game in its current state. (I dont know if there are any plans on giving this ship out after release. But I suspect not.) 2) Its very likely that there will be premium ships. Yet noone knows how they may look like. What benefits they offer compared to crafted ships etc. 3) Its a starter ship. IMO better than the current one. She is a pretty stable gunplatform, maneuverable enough for her size and over all alot of fun to sail and learn the game. Its not a whopping 1st rate ship of the line which will blast you out of the water three times for one broadside. She is a beginner ship which will ease the start of the game.
Jon Allen Posted December 28, 2015 Author Posted December 28, 2015 Thanks for the tip that they "might" be sending out keys daily. I was going to wander off until Thursday/Friday but I guess I should keep an eye on my email inbox/spam filter.
Captain Comery Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 I hope you enjoy the game. Out of interest what nation do you intend to join?
Jon Allen Posted December 28, 2015 Author Posted December 28, 2015 (edited) I've been pondering that. English is probably my default because I've been reading historical texts on the Royal Navy for years. American Navy as well for that matter. My biggest problem, as someone who only speaks English, "other nations-wise" is that I don't speak a word of the tongues of those nations. Difficulty pronouncing ship names and character names and the inability to read those languages is holding me back a little. Otherwise I'd love to jump in on one of those nations that is smaller and needs players. Never been afraid to be an underdog. Edited December 28, 2015 by Jon Allen
Captain Comery Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Why not be a pirate? We are a growing force that Cana track anything. Even ourselves!
'Sharpe Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Jon Allen, as the player base grows I don't think you will have much difficulty finding an English speaking group amongst other non-English speaking nations. I recommend the Dutch if you're looking for an "underdog", seem like great guys and of course the Dutch almost as a rule speak excellent English. Of course I also recommend the U.S. Faction, if you'd like to be underdog numerically to the British and Pirates.
Jon Allen Posted December 28, 2015 Author Posted December 28, 2015 The US is regarded as an underdog? I find that surprising. I assumed a lot of US players would swerve that direction.
'Sharpe Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 The US is regarded as an underdog? I find that surprising. I assumed a lot of US players would swerve that direction. In fact, many U.S.-based players are committing treason and joining England or Pirate, on behalf of their literary/historical ubiquity (England) or perceived "cool"-factor (Pirates). It seems like the U.S. will be the numerical underdog against those two. If this were not the case, I personally would have thought twice before joining U.S. faction (and I am an American citizen) because I loathe playing as "the" dominant faction in any game. As a side note, interestingly enough many of the prominent U.S. faction players are not from the U.S. So, thankfully, it's not as cut and dry as just looking at which real life nation has the highest population, and manifestly such will transfer into the game.
Jon Allen Posted December 28, 2015 Author Posted December 28, 2015 (edited) I just wanted to note, for anyone who was curious, that I did get my Steam Key today. Purchased the game yesterday. So that makes me happy. Thought I was gonna have to wait until Friday. EDIT: But now I guess I really gotta make up my mind on this nations thing.... Edited December 28, 2015 by Jon Allen
PointBlank Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Please could someone tell me is this game going to be game where the ships we attain are only from gameplay or is it that you will be given the option not to grind but purchase said ships.... as I have yet to find an answer to this question..... Not "well not yet there isn't." Kind regards
Ink Posted January 1, 2016 Posted January 1, 2016 Please could someone tell me is this game going to be game where the ships we attain are only from gameplay or is it that you will be given the option not to grind but purchase said ships.... as I have yet to find an answer to this question..... Not "well not yet there isn't." Kind regards All ships that already exist in the game or are planned to be introduced (excluding the luxury yacht) will not be available via real money, there is no pay to win if you meant that. Ships that will be available via real money will only have cosmetic changes that will not affect gameplay and will be announced separately. Also, same questions had been asked before a couple of time, check the reply by the devs here
thomas aagaard Posted January 1, 2016 Posted January 1, 2016 Currently you get the Yacht as "downloadable content" So adding more ships DLC should be pretty easy for the devs. (when we are just talking about steam) When the devs do add more DCL I trust they will do it in a way so it will not become pay to win.
