OlavDeng2 Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 While this is nice and all, the resources required to do this is quite large, and with how demanding the game currently is, if you ad 1000 crew on a santissima, and you have 10 of them in a battle and 40 other smaller ships(including victory), say we end up with 30 000 crew in total, having those running around and doing things would put even a x99 system with a titan x in minimum settings to a crawl.

But i feel like the ships feels kinda dead with the current amount and crew But with a good LOD system i could not imagion 20-30 more crew on deck would cause that much lag I agree more would be nice, but the game is allready demaning and with my r9 270 running at almost minnimum settings i was getting 20 fps in medium sized battles, adding more models would only decrease it and on a victory or somethings 20-30 more people will still seem empty, so i would say right now it is not viable to implement this system. edit: note a r9 270 is a low end-mid range card.. so it is a good comparison point for what a lot of people will be running. 'Sharpe Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 (edited) In my opinion, this is one of the lowest priority concerns this game has. There are so many things to fix and improve - it's not even a full game yet with a RvR endgame goal and way to win. You get used to the sparse crew pretty easily, managing your yards, broadsides, and maintaining formation is enough to keep one busy. If more crew were added to a realistic level you'd also have to start adding realistic crew death and injury, and blood, and screams for that matter, which is something we can pleasantly ignore at the moment. That said I wouldn't complain if more crew were added; even if the additional crew were sprite-y, as for example in the Take Command games. That would help with CPU processing and also take a little off the effect of the violence of a grape stern rake. Edit - another thing to consider is that currently we have auto crew re spawn after battle. It's believable because your crew is currently sparse and unquantifiable. If ever we get full crews, we'd have to show crew loss. If we show crew loss, it becomes more tangible, and difficult to ignore the auto crew re spawn mechanic. So the game would need to re-think how it manages crew regeneration. Edited December 17, 2015 by 'Sharpe
GoldenEagleLeader Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 In POTBS they have an option to limit the crew size that you see on the deck of your ship so why not have the same option in Naval Action where you can limit the crew size you see to correspond with your own computer?

It takes time and resources to introduce it(and dont forget, with more options means more testing with different options enabled/disabled is needed) 2. it is purely cosmetic, even the UI is currently ugly(to put it bluntly) that being said, it should be introduced at some point... but not yet, it is not worth the effort and the game needs more optimization and needs other focuses before something like this is introduced 1

What I was imagining would be a similar show as Total War Empire naval warfare offers, this is in regards to the crews. But as mentioned previously, it would demand more of ones graphic card, alongside the GPU, I suppose.

Creative Assembly has spent well over 10 years maturing their engine to handle pathing, AI and rendering for hundreds of 3D troops. To my knowledge the Unity engine has never been put to comparable purposes.

And lets not forget... the total war games in terms of optimzation probably lies at worse than naval action... and on ships you only have a fraction of their full crew in those games.
Jacob van Heemskerck Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 The only thing i'm missing with crew is some for example, a groep off redcoats on the quarter/weatherdek and some man on the yard's a man on wheel/helm and a captain ofcourse! All of this can be semi static to reduce the take of resources! And some puffs off smoke when at pistol shot range from muskets and pistols! It makes it more alive on dek. But i'm no game developer so i wil have to do wat game labs give, and as it now i'm already satisfied .
