I have some small ideas, I apologise if they've been thrown out before. I understand the current way of upgrading your ship is to use the various upgrade mods and I think it is a fine concept. My suggestion is thus. Would it be a possible to implement the ability to "upgrade" a ship in a way that you add mod slots both permanent and non permanent. It would be like refitting a ship in dry dock. It would allow captains to get a basic ship and spending time and gold and maybe even needing a certain amount of XP you could add an upgrade slot on your ship to allow more mods.

It might mean that players spend more time with their ships. I foresee a time in the future when there will be hundreds/thousands of players strutting about sailing 1st rates etc with no real reason to better themself, implementing what I have suggested may give players good reason to spend longer on smaller rates because they've put time and effort into that ship. Of course you'd have to have rules with it such as the cost per upgrade increasing in price every time and upgrades slots on the heavier rates costing a heap more. It could be something added onto the crafting side of the game where instead of building a whole new ship they could use crafting notes gold and hours adding upgrade slots to already built ships.

My other suggestion is a smaller more insignificant one, with such a 'dry dock' concept would it not be possible to pay a price in order to get permanent mods removed from your ship so as to allow using it again. I know its called permanent for a reason but in reality if you were scrapping a ship that had an awesome optimised rudder would it not be recycled, or is it not possible? Just a thought

Well, currently the tag 'Basic' all the way up to 'exceptional' means nothing for a ship. The only thing that matters in the current crafting system is the upgrades, perms and regular ones.

When you enable the ability to just add those, what is the point of crafting? Since you can already designate the ship characteristics, there is nothing unique left...

In order to even consider this, there needs to be a system that adds value to the ship Tag, as i proposed some time ago here:

In regard to your second comment, it does not make sense in most cases that perms are reusable.

For example  an improved magazine access, how is that 'transferred' into another ship? It's an optimization of the internals of the initial ship.
