Captiva Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I would like to expand on an idea that has been floating around this forum these past few months. As I understand it, the developers would like to encourage the sailing of various ships by all players in hopes that the game is not ultimately flooded with, say, predominately frigates and the higher ship classes. So how about this idea? All players are given a ship slot for each rated class of ship...not a slot for every ship within each class...but one slot, for one ship, for every class of ship. Every time the player levels up to the next class of ship, he retains the ship that he chose to sail from the previous level that he progressed up from. Then, periodically, the player is given mandatory missions for each class of ship that the player has in his possession. This would insure that all players would continue to sail all the classes of ships that they are currently leveled up to, for the life of the game. These missions could be molded for the strength of each class of ship. The smaller classes could be given scouting or exploration missions, medium classes of ships could be given escort duties or transporting of goods duties. The larger class of ships could be issued combat missions. I'd like to hear your thoughts and suggestions that could improve upon this idea or your thoughts as to why this would be a bad idea. Thanks! 1
admin Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I personally loved the requirement to sail every ship and we know the reasons why some players did not like it. We have read all proposals carefully and new progression system will revolve around classes and some orders will require a particular ship. We will post it before starting coding it for player review. 3
maturin Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Sounds great! Emergent gameplay on the OW is the way to go.

maturin Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 care to explain in more depth?))) Basically I would like to see more Orders that spawn NPCs at certain location, in a semi-random sort of way. There could be a convoy or a smuggler that you have to find, but you don't know exactly where they will be placed, or if the wind will be favorable, or if fog will hide them. And the game doesn't know whether or not other NPCs/players might attack the subject of the quest. So anything can happen. When I have to go and sink 10 brigs in a brig, that is like a shopping list. But if I have to find and escort 1 brig in totally uncontrollable situations where anything can go wrong, that is an adventure. Also, whenever there is suspense and and a very specific goal, covering the large distances in OW is less dull. 3
Sinbad Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Not sure i'm too keen to see myself restricted to slots for each ship type or mandatory missions i have to undertake, random missions that a player can choose from sounds a better option for me captiva.
AKPyrate Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 One possible pitfall I see is that higher level players will end up having the best, most upgraded smaller ships. Newer players trying to have an equal battle will only be able to find players with tricked out vessels 'in their class', which will negate any chance they have. I like the idea for trying to encourage higher level players to sail smaller vessels at times, but I think having incentives to sail those smaller vessels for certain activities could be incentive enough. For example, a cutter could be a great exploration vessel, a Lynx could be a great dispatch vessel, a snow has a great cargo capacity, etc.
SirThorne Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 This is an interesting suggestion, and I think something like this would be a good addition, but I worry about forcing players to sail ships that they might not enjoy. I would focus on using the carrot rather than the stick so players get to feel good about the ship they choose to sail, rather than feeling forced.
