AFAIK the sail damage effects are placeholders. Mast damage is already fully implemented and I believe I heard a hint about plans for damage to individual yards. I personally hope that the sailing model gets refined enough that we can set sails individually for prettiness. This level of detail would also allow things like cut sheets, braces and lifts. So basically you disable a single sail on the enemy's ship, or prevent the yard from bracing round. This could ruin maneuverability at a critical juncture.

One thing I actually liked in ETW is that cannonballs could pull the sails along with them before punching a hole in them: that looked really nice.

Yeah, but it was nonsense of course. Even if there's no real wind, sails are heavy and taut. Roundshot will punch through instantly and without any visual effect on the sail, like a bullet.

Very nice and excellent graphics.

- Also agree with maturin and Killick comments.

- Some vissible damage on the ships during combat according to damage received would be nice.

- Probably you still working the end of battle (sinking...?)

- Why there 's a time counter there for 1 hour? Is this a timed event (like duel) or this is how it supposed to be in all battles?

- Some graphic fx for crew and sound of crew, captain during battles (like dealing or receiving damage) also would be nice.

This is just beautiful. I know I said it before, but watching that first clip I feel a very, very strong urge to walk down those steps and explore the ship. Please tell me that the game will have the ability to freely move the camera along the deck, or at least the possibility to mod that ourselves.

On the second clip I love how those pennants are slowly waving in the wind: gives a sense of scale and majesty to the ship.

Thanks Wind for the videos! i would like to ask you a question, is naval action the video called ''short test'' in your youtube channel?

Is the first video under some sort of time acceleration?  The ship and crew movement seems very jittery.

Roll and pitch still doesn't look very natural up close, at least not in those weather conditions. I think the ships are reacting dynamically to those small, low-period seas and bouncing around too much.

roll and pitch needs work yes

if you guys have suggestions on improvement of ship behavior on waves it is perfect timing.. we will fix it.

Hmmn, I think that a call for videos might get results.

Maybe look at the pitching in 5:04 of this video?

And at 8:20 you can see her rolling with no sails set. Check out 8:40 as well.

A few videos don't mean much, though, because pitch and roll are always changing.

The less sail you have set, the more you roll. And you will roll heavier when sailing dead downwind. And once you fix the sail-setting order and make topgallants and royals the last sails set, then that could affect pitching, as well. Having the uppermost sails set can make your bow plunge farther into the water.

How does it work in the game right now? Is it as I suspect, where the ships react to each small wave when the weather is mild? Because in those conditions, roll should be a gentle, lazy process. Small little swells won't have much effect. A ship's roll is sometimes more a property of the hull itself, as it reacts to various forces that are spread out over time. If you go to the harbor and look at moored boats, some could be rolling heavily while others just sway a little bit. It has to do with the timing of forces and how they accumulate and aid or counteract each other. What I'm saying is that for mild weather you could just use a pretty animation, rather than using the wave-based physics that are good for stormy seas.

In general, when the game's ships roll, it should look like there is weight behind it, not the rapid jerking of a light plastic model.

Edit:

This is precisely the sort of motion that I envision for sailing in a decent swell.

I'm happy with the ship motion in a storm.

I think old timey naval combat has to be time accelerated to some extent, but you can only accelerate the waves a limited amount before they look unnatural.   It's a delicate balance and it looks good to me.

Frigate duel

I can't believe at the start of the battle the french ship turned up wind and lost all speed considering the enemy was bearing down on him. Then the enemy lost the advantage by doing the same thing.

The wind is your friend.

Touching on the topics about the look of the waves and speed of the boats I also was a professional yachting photographer for many years and sailed on windsurfers to coota boats, around the world race yachts and America's cup yachts to old schooners.

You really can't imagine how big the sea can get in big storms and no video here captures that. It's terrifying.

Fleets of the day sank to the bottom of the sea in such conditions. When sailing ships are surfing the waves the speed is pretty impressive also. It's not slow I can tell you and when the bow ploughs into the trough you aint going to be standing on the deck.

In places like the NW of France they have huge tides and often ships can't enter harbours during low tide as it's too shallow. So what happens when you get shallow harbors and storms.Well the wave height is increased and so in places like this you get very steep waves that are bone crunching. When a yacht sails up and over such a wave the hull gets partly airborne resulting in a huge impact that jarrs your bones and the process repeats over and over. But sailing down these types of waves is more frightening as the yacht gets out of control as it races down the wave and gusts further complicate navigating the vessel. Then suddenly it hits the trough with the bow diving into the sea then it slowly raises and rides up the wave to only then drop down the next wave over and over.It aint fun  and you don't want to be sitting out there waiting for high tide to enter a harbor in such conditions.Really the game doesn't need this type of weather as you wouldn't be able to have combat. What I have seen so far looks pretty good.

Also the use of ballast stopped rolling. They used stone, iron and lead.french ships even had sand and burried their dead in it.They would be pretty steady.I sailed on the swedish schooner "Vida" and the "New endeavour "a replica of the Endeavour and they didn't roll when under sail with ballast.

some more reference for roll and pitch in storm: German tallship Gorch Fock 2 maybe a bit extrem i try find something in calm water. she kinda has the size of a 3rd rate might find something usefull.

she managed once 18.2knots in 70kn wind but a sail ripped and she had to leave the tropical storm

found something pretty solid stability

A new video about the game. I used other players' videos.

Also, there are two previous videos:

there are just some differences at the end
