Hi captains :) !

I watched a video on Youtube and saw a player using "depower" button during turns on regular basis. My question is: is it possible to make a better turn if you don't use the staysails?

What are the pros & cons of such a behaviour?

Thank you for your answers & explanations :D .

I've not done any timed testing but generally 90% of players use it as thus: if you are turning into the wind you will depower so the jibs and stays are not catching the wind which pushes against your turning motion. If you are coming out of the wind, wearing with the wind, you will power and your jibs will pull your bow around quicker.

In tacking you use it in the same manner, watch your knots and adjust your rudder accordingly if you are backing.

dont forget that you can help your fingers a lot by

double click rudder commands A D to lock rudder full left or right

double click yard commands Q E   Z C to lock yards into full left or right

double click = two fast button clicks

The number of times I accidentally engage that while making fine adjustments onto a course infuriates me. Would it not make more sense to be shift/alt/ctrl+key instead so you actually have to mean it?

Take what people say into consideration but test it yourself.  There are a lot of wrong premises based on false perception.  Just because a lot of people perceive it to be so doesn't make it to.  Do the testing.

More recently, I've noticed the stays'ls helping to keep speed up a lot through a tack.  So, it might depend on whether you want to sacrifice forward speed coming out of the turn for quicker rotation to get guns on target faster.  Remember though, for sternway you should shift your rudder to the opposite direction you want to go, and then back once you put some forward way on again.  Also, this might (and probably does) vary depending on the vessel you're sailing.

Why don't you just tell us where (if) NorthenWolves is wrong? Because his perception is mine also at the moment.
