I had started gathering materials to craft a Lynx in Sale-Trou and decided i needed them in Port Royal instead and started moving them. i quickly noticed the weight limits and knew i was going to be making a few trips using a Cutter. i had to move 71 Oak planks, but could only carry 33 at a time.

so i was sailing along with my 33 planks and thought why couldnt my cargo be used to make repairs?. having 33 planks would give me so much hull repair material, or maybe more sail cloth for alot of sail repair. all the crafting materials we have could be used for field repairs. you could even carry extra replacement cannon. having a system like this would make repairs a strategy.

to go along with this I would make some repairs open world only. mast replacement, hull repair, and external rudder replacement I would make open world only. everything inside the ship like frame, pumps, interior part of the rudder, sails and leaks be repairs that can be made in battle.

I know its not all that realistic, but I think it could be good for gameplay to have a repair strategy using crafting materials and cargo hold for repairs.

Not the first time that this is suggested... Now that all these materials are in game it would even be possible.
And yet I doubt that this will be done anytime soon, if at all, since there are still a lot of things to implement and the game has to be released sooner or later. I like the idea, but so far devs always stuck to their "repair kits".

Ships should inherently patch themselves up slowly when lightly damaged as a few holes can be plugged and parts of the ship that aren't completely necessary to the ship can be sawn off and used to patch the ship up by about 25% of it's total health. Of course things like losing a mast are going to be permanent and you won't have the materials to replace one of those with. Larger ships even carried smaller ships (such as a cutter) inside as cargo so that could be broken downand used for further repairs. Naturally simply plugging a few holes is not the same as having your ship careened or put in a dry dock and if you're cannabalising other ship parts for repairs your ship will be somewhat less durable in battle; IIRC there's already a damage resistance system, I've not had the time to play for a while if there isn't then one should be implemented, naturally a better built ship would be built out of stronger materials. Thus sawing pieces off your ship such as the gunwales would lower the resistance of your ship and potentially increase it's ability to be boarded and captured or lower the resistance of your ships armour.

Obviously this would take a while (days likely) so it wouldn't happen in battle (though survival should increase resistance to damage and patch completely destroyed pieces of armour (but only patch them once also personally I'd prefer if survival were changed to "damage control") so your ship would repair slowly on the open seas, usually helping out if you are far from a port.
