Just lost a dura on a ship (a green pickle  ) because I fell asleep after taking the painkillers I get for my knee (today was a particularly hectic day so I took the max dose) since they are oxycodone they are rather heavy stuff and had me nod off just long enough to re-appear in port, shot to pieces by an NPC or some lucky player.
It got me thinking though, if a five minute timer were added, which after there was no player activity the log-off sequence would start (or you'd just be logged off, still in your ship until the timer runs out.
This would help all players (and not just the one who has gone for a nap) since they might be torn away for a few minutes due to an emergency.

A notice popping up saying "you are asleep at the helm Cap'tin, wake up"  and once you do something you stop the logoff sequence, if you don't the logoff counter you are logged off safely, unless you get attacked.

Or am I being too carebear? Should people be penalised for being AFK even if they have a really good reason since most will just be browsing the net and not away for a legit reason. Those who had a really pressing matter to attend to, or like me fell asleep due to pain meds (or similar such as anti anxiety meds like diazepam or other medication that causes drowsiness and somnolence) or have had a family emergency (lost a ship in in another space based MMO which I won't mention as I'm unsure of the rules regarding other MMOs and the discussion thereof) as my mother (I'm 22, pay half the rent) whilst lighting the fire didn't notice the tie on her dressing gown was near a flame and I had to run down and put her out. (for all who care; apparently if I wasn't there she'd be dead according to the doctor but her injuries ended up being rather mild for an upper body full burn and after 2 grafts she is alright, though she still needs a few outpatient surgeries to get proper neck motion) Any other reason to be pulled from the keyboard obviously falls under this category.
Obviously this means some people get the short end of the stick but the old saying "Don't sail what you can't afford to lose" comes to mind.

Well, after 10 minutes, I think, you are invisible in the open world after logging off.

I wouldn't want an auto afk kick, I've afk sailed across the map in a disposable lynx for 2-3 hours.

Absolutely not. I often walk off while sailing or alt tab to do other things. I need to be able to use that afk ti e to let my ship sail somewhere.

As for you nodding off I don't know that the game could help unless it was a toggle setting for the .00000001% of people with narcolepsy.

In the end losing 1 dura because of some emergency or sleep medication is not a big deal.... If thr devs invoke the ability to refit s ship to get that back.

Sorry I've to dredge this thread up from the forum depths but in hindsight it was a bad idea.
If I'm in pain it's my choice to take painkillers that I know are rather strong and play a game where you can be attacked and lose stuff. It comes down to common sense and initially I had none. Looking back on it, if you want to get drunk and play the game then lose your favourite ship you chose to drink. I can't choose not to be in pain but I can choose when to play the game. Autolog would mess with too many things and even if there is a real emergency (such as your house catching fire, an earthquake or Godzilla) it's only a game and ships are only a bunch of pixels and code.

I wish there was a 'no bump' button so the other people posting in the thread new I had replied but the thread doesn't have to be brought up again.
