Kaaru62 Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 this is an idea I came up with to keep everyone from grinding up to line ships and ganking newbies. separate military ships from civilian ships with Snow being the largest civilian ship. when you enlist in a navy, you are assigned a ship and given orders on where to sail it and what you can shoot at. this keeps people from running off and ganking people with military grade ships, unless its part of their orders. civilian ships don't have orders and do what the want. one benefit from service is the ability for the navy/server to spawn/herd players into large pvp battles through order/missions. an argument for this that not everyone will be logged on to be ordered to an area for battle. the way I figure, a military ship assigned to you is not yours anyway so it doesn't matter where it is when you log on. the server/navy can spawn you into whatever ship it needs you in wherever it may be assigning missions when you spawn. if you make military service a career, you can progress into larger and larger ships through performance and time, like in real life.
admin Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Yes we were thinking about that too. And are discussing this internally. If it is implemented it will act as covenants in Dark Souls. Joining a certain organization will forcefully impose certain rules on you. In addition to that we already plan to add PVP Honor kills requirement to progression above a certain rank. (Honor kill - victory against the enemy of the same BR or higher)
Ethan_Lysander Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 If that was implemented does that mean I need to pick a career patch early and stick it it? If I enlist in a Navy, I need to stay in the Navy. ie. I cannot get a trade ship and do trading etc... when I'm not required for Military Service?
Robert Danforth Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Well, it wouldn't certainly increase the number of privateers for each nation.
Powderhorn Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Now, I would argue for privateers to be limited to one of the lighter frigates. But I think the idea itself has merit. Still, who would give the orders for these larger vessels? Server AI? Elected players of the faction? Whomever is ranked highest at the time on log-in? As far as privateer v. rated ship, one way to implement it might be to have people with their own vessels, but have vessels in different areas that you can go to and assume command of to fulfill X mission. You might require a person to have Y rank to take charge of the ship. This would allow people freedom of choice, while preventing privateering rated vessels.
Capt Bubbles Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Hi, this is an idea I came up with to keep everyone from grinding up to line ships and ganking newbies. separate military ships from civilian ships with Snow being the largest civilian ship. when you enlist in a navy, you are assigned a ship and given orders on where to sail it and what you can shoot at. this keeps people from running off and ganking people with military grade ships, unless its part of their orders. civilian ships don't have orders and do what the want. one benefit from service is the ability for the navy/server to spawn/herd players into large pvp battles through order/missions. an argument for this that not everyone will be logged on to be ordered to an area for battle. the way I figure, a military ship assigned to you is not yours anyway so it doesn't matter where it is when you log on. the server/navy can spawn you into whatever ship it needs you in wherever it may be assigning missions when you spawn. if you make military service a career, you can progress into larger and larger ships through performance and time, like in real life. It will surely reduce the arms race between nations and ganking, but will also reduce the current freedom for a player. I love my Bellona, but still want to have a trading or exploring run when I feel like it. By forcing me to choose between civy or military career this freedom is taken away, that price is to high for my liking. So I'm not in favour of your proposal, although I fully support the reasons why you post it. Ganking is excessive right now, but there are still some ways to counter it: - gang up with likeminded friends (not perse of the same nation) to chase those "brave" gankers away (pretty easy as they always shy away from equal or uneven odds when presented with it) - find a quiet spot in the map for your own In the long term I would suggest a XP and gold penalty in case of ganking. For example: after having won a ganking battle of BR 800 vs 200, you only receive 10% of the earned XP and gold based on your great achievements as a ganker. Another solution would be a reputation value per player, based on the BR of every won or initiated battle. I'm pretty sure a commodore in a Vic with the status "sealclubber" is not so proud of his high rank, just because its visible for everyone how he obtained it. He or she should be the doormat of his nation, very few will actively pursue that position. In addition to that we already plan to add PVP Honor kills requirement to progression above a certain rank. (Honor kill - victory against the enemy of the same BR or higher) Interesting suggestion, but a ganker can easily achieve that by 1 battle while ganking in all the others he initiates. I think a reputation-value would be more effective as it is based on all your exploits, not on 1. I really dig the enourmous freedom this sandbox gives me and accept the fact that not all ppl have the proper attitude to handle that freedom, just like IRL. Lets find a way to discourage unwanted behaviour without reducing everyones freedom. Grtzzz Bubbles.

I would think it would mean that you would simply not progress in the navy while playing as a trader and vice versa, not that you would be locked out of switching between roles.navy - reputation and honor driven progress merchant / privateer - profit driven progress I see no reason why a Navy captain could not resign temporarily from the Navy to pursue a profit-driven career (Jack Aubrey did! ). He could even continue to accrue reputation and honor that would apply to his Navy career if rejoined or was reinstated.

Ganking may be a side effect of the freedom we have in the open world, but it's preferable over the alternative of being shoehorned in to things.
