Malucomaf Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Hello sailors I would like to initiate a discussion that will help me and I believe will help many beginners. 1 - it is better to be part of a nation, be neutral or be a pirate? 2 - is the best beginner player continues with the Lynx and improved from the guns, or go shopping for a larger ship, wherever possible? 3 - the only way to farm gold is sinking or capturing other ships, or is already possible to farm gold in another way in the game? 1
Ethan_Lysander Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 For what its worth, here are my thoughts... 1. I would always opt to play a nation with the current game mechanics. If you opt to play neutral the only ships I believe you can attack are pirates. If you attack any other nation I believe you yourself become a pirate, and from what I understand once your a pirate there's no going back. I'm not sure of any advantages in playing as a Pirate over playing as a Nation. 2. I would save my money and look to jump into a bigger ship as soon as I earn my first promotion, and would recommend even staying in a Lynx until you can afford a Navy Brig. If you have the rank, a larger ship will give you more crew making boarding the AI easier. In a lynx I would not bother buying any better guns, but I would make sure I install any modules I "win" in battles. 3. At the moment I believe the only way to get gold is through capturing or sinking. With the game mechanics at the moment you do get more gold for capturing and selling ships from sinking them, however to do this you need to have a bigger crew and you need to be able to get back to port to actually sell the ship. In capturing the ship you do lose potential XP as your not doing as much damage capturing as you would if you sunk it. If you sink the ship you maximise your potential XP (which is great from leveling up) and you still get a decent amount of gold, and you don't have you worry about heading back to port (which may be some distance away to sell your prize. As a new player would focus on sinking first and then as you level up focus on capturing prizes to increase you gold (if needed) to purchase a bigger ship. Just remember when you get any other ship other than the free Lynx you will have to pay for port repairs if you cannot repair in the battle or at sea. Whatever your opt to do... Have fun, and happy hunting. 1
Magnum Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 When you get your first Lynx - I think the main #1 feature to partake of is the fact that it costs ZERO to repair it. I would go out and bang it up left right and center and keep getting if fixed up and back in battle for ZERO gold, you will soon have enough battles to learn how to get away without getting captured and earn enough gold to buy a cutter - but don't, go out and capture one instead You will be well on your way ...... 1
Prater Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Neutral can only fight pirates. Might be a boring start. Lynx/Yacht are really fast vessels that can get out of just about any bad situation. I'd stick to fore-and-aft vessels until you learn the game and how to escape. Then relearn it in a Mercury Brig. 1

kang Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 I'd suggest capturing a privateer as soon as possible. They are much more easier to fight in than the linx, imo. I wouldn't buy a ship until you hit lieutenant or master and commander. At least for now, in the time it takes to earn the money for a ship of your level, you're halfway to the next level. That will change as we get closer to release. Just don't put anything but grey upgrades on your captured ships and transfer the good upgrades that drop to your warehouse as soon as you can. Save your money for exceptional upgrades which you won't actually put on a ship until you've purchased one.

Last patch i would have agreed but with the grape being hard to use for someone just starting i would say capping a ship for a new player right now is far trickier than earning the gold to buy one. With the Yacht in stores now i would say save up the 2k for one of them as they are as good as the privateer except for low crew/capping numbers. If grape changes again to make it easier to cap, and i am not saying it is not ok as used correctly it is still effective, then privateers are fun 1
