I think that the ship diagram should be vertical with the bows towards the top of the screen. I know this takes horizontal screen space but couldn't it at least be an option?

 

and thinking about it an isometric view ship diagram (rather than plan view) wouldn't need to take much space

The left of the ship would be on the left of the screen - the right on the right. The ship and diagram would just map closer to each other.

 

Are your left guns fully loaded? Look at the left of the diagram.
