I'm curious about the NA business model. I'm not totally familiar with the variations of business models that support MMOG, so I'm also hoping to gain a better understanding of the options and trade-offs for NA. Here is my limited understanding of the options:

1. Free-to-play, but pay for premium upgrades/modules/consumables etc. -- I think this would be the Wargaming.net model (World of Warships)

pros: gets lots of casual players into the game; player gets to determine how much to spend on what; devs can shape game experience with pricing

cons: lots of low quality players can distort gameplay; fairness/value issue of buying vs. earning content

2. Lifetime subscription -- onetime payment to get into the game and that's it. I think this is the current NA business model

pros: everyone in game is on equal footing re: content; rewards dedication to quality gameplay

cons: significant barrier to entry to new players; price changes may alienate players;

3. Monthly subscription --

pros: dedicated players over time will dominate the game

cons: barrier to entry; casual players will tend to fall away;

4. Hybrid -- some combination of all the above

pros: players can choose how/what they pay to fit play style

What are other business models that could support NA? Which would be the best for NA? How would NA implement the best model?

It is not a significant barrier to entry to new players... Lots and lots and lots of games are like that, and they sell just fine.

What would be the leading examples you can think of with similar genre?

If i'm not wrong, they said it would work like the GW2 (shop with cosmetics items) + pay one time.

Who said anything about genre?

None of us know the price of this game when it is finished... but I find it likely that it will be cheaper then most new AAA titles.

And pay one time is still a lot cheaper than most "free to play" games... They all require you to pay something to remain competitive.

It might be a good idea to make some sort of "demo" where you can try out the game.

(maybe limit it to the starting ship? one character? maybe a limit to specific nations or to a smaller part of the map?)

+1.  And the good old-school Demo, I love it.  :)

Correct.  The main business model that Admin has said they expect to implement is a buy once, play forever, with Guild Wars 2 style premium content for purchase.  At the moment, they've announced "Premium" ships which will not have durabilities (but will still require in game funds to repair after a battle), but I don't recall if they've announced other premium content.

I wouldnt be averse to have to pay for "New Ship Models",it takes time and a lot of effort to make them so a small cost would be fine by me.They dont have to be "Uber" ships but maybe "Specific" vessels that really existed in NA's timeframe.Obviously we dont know if the Devs wil allow 3D Modellers to offer new Vessels to the Community, but it would be awesome if they did.

whatever makes them enough money. if the money is not coming in then they won't be able to continually develop the game. that we would like.

I agree.

They devs will need some way to get an continuous income if the servers are to stay online for years to come and the devs to go on working on it...

I think the way paradox do it with the Europa Universalis game is a good way to do it.

One or two times a year add a new expansion.

New ship types, new areas added, new goods and mechanics.

You can still play the game without it and some of the new things can be used without it. (like you can fight against the new ships.)

But some of the new stuff require the new expansion - Like To sail the ship yourself you need to have the expansion.

This will naturally only work if new ships are not better than the existing ships.

True! But dont forget this is a MMO and not a (mostly) single player game.

If modders will produce content everyone need it. Otherwise you couldnt use them online in Open world.

The only chance would be game-labs would check the quality and would release it in the official client.

Or to enable "private" modified servers.

The best model for me and i think for all it a model like EVE

You just have to buy you license for playing the game in real money or in game money that will let the hard core player be reward for the time they play and the more casual player to play more in order to generate in game money so they have many option to do it :

1 join a guild and so work together to make more profits

2 play for defend the economie of there guild or nation because they have a big interest to do it

3 playing more

but surely not a pay to win with premium ship and premium things this will not push the economie and make richest player better.

thx for reaing me poor english

A monthly subscription would be the best and generate regular income. And the most honest system, because all players are equal with the same opportunities then.

Naval Action is going to be pay once and play.

Premium content like Guildwars2 does it is going to create a constant inflow once the playerbase is founded.

Stuff like premium ships (which wont be better but different in their characteristics). Maybe some consumables. Who knows?

But we will have this model for sure. Once payed you wont have to subscribe to a monthly fee.

Players will never be equal cause when it's not a matter of money, it's a matter of free time.

Some players can only dedicate a few hours per week to their favorite game whereas others can play  40h hours or more...

About the shop, i also imagine cosmetic items such as custom paint for the hull (no pink please :D ), your ship name painted on the stern, figurehead, etc...

But even with premium ships i fear that it would not be enough for a regular income allowing the devs to maintain and develop the game.

I guess there are other ways to increase the game income with the NA buisness model system.

Btw, does people know how work the Planet Side 2 shop ?

if 'im not wrong, it's : F2P + premium membership + shop with cosmetic items, (premium ?) armours and weapons items

There is an entire thread to discuss this at the following link, please use that thread to discuss this topic:

Please read through it before responding.

Relatively speaking and if made available, I will spend...

A lot on premium ships if they are close in capability to the regular ships and I get to keep them forever.

A lot on anything that will ease my grind.

A little on cosmetics.
