we could make a small race for first of april - will check with the programming team

current fastest ship is HMS surprise and it will win as auto-skipper always picks the best angles of yards to the wind.

unless people are allowed to fire and it will be a free-for all battle race.

In my dream version of the game, the fastest ship is different depending on the weather. Maybe there's another frigate that is faster than the Surprise in very light winds. Maybe the 74-gunner is better at bullying her way through heavy seas and will outstrip the Surprise in a gale.

And then there's fore-and-aft rigs, of course.

Maturin's idea would be great if it could be brought in.  I would add that being able to have cusomizable rigging setups would be interesting too.  I might be in the same ship as the guy next to me, but his sails are rigged for better downwind speeds, and mine is rigged in a way that allows sailing into the wind a bit better than his....

Here's a thought... how about an in game Race?

Just like the America's Cup, race pylons (light houses, or something)...  the yachts would make great racers. (any ship might be fun)

Sorry if it's been discussed (I did a quick query and saw nothing).

Would be a fun non-combat activity. For reference, both World of Tanks and War THunder had/have race modes. War Thunder Sim races are...challenging, to say the lease, and Chaffe Races were hilarious.

Now, just to keep ships from bumping into each other. Plus most modenern day races (that I know of, and I do NOT follow ship races at all) have atleast one stretch of course that involve a bunch of tacking. Yea, races will involve lots of bumping. Inflate the rubber bumpers, men!

Was thinking... maybe Manual Sails is all that would be available.   It would be a great way to practice.   You would have to set your sails at all times.

Another thought (no idea how it could be done)... would be a capture the flag sort-a-thing.   Some kind of goal the teams would have to attack/defend.

(I know people are thinking... go play Quake)

Manually setting sails properly, if you're not just going to fiddle until the speed stops going up, requires a thousand little details that aren't modeled.  Without detail pre-luffing and luffing animations, it's very hard.

Ah, very true... no luffing, it would be difficult.

And to be clear, those are just the two easiest, watching for a partial stall and a luff.  Telltales, how the reefing lines are behaving, all of these can help you to see if the sail is drawing correctly.  :)
