I was just wondering how many different types of cannon ammunition do we have in the game I mean I assume that we have the normal cannon ball but do we have anything else because cannons fired a host of different types of shot not just the  stranded cannon ball.

4: Ball, double ball, chain shot and grape shot.

 

Watching a few videos would certainly show you that. And learning to use punctuation would make your text much more readable.

I take you point about punctuation. I really should check my posts before i send them.On the subject of videos i just haven't had the time to check them out yet but i will do today.

Currently we have normal and long cannons of various sizes, we also have carronades of different sizes. For all the guns we have 4 types of ammo: normal shot, double shot, chain shot, and grape shot.

What are the differences between long cannons and standard. I understand that the longer guns have a greater range, however, I don't know what the downside to using them would ever be. Should I ever be using standard length guns?

Longs are nice when you're starting out since they give you a bit more range and they shoot flatter.  Eventually though, the reload penalty will start to hurt and you might want to consider changing over to regular.

Also maybe in the future, the extra weight of the longs might impart some penalties on your ships sailing characteristics. 

 

This is just speculation on my behalf though, I haven't seen it confirmed either way. 

 

Hopefully both ammunition and cannon will factor in for ship weight, and your ability to decide how much you stock of each.

Now that would be cool. I love games where there is not eternal ammo, but where your shots actually count and you cannot be too waistful.

Then again, the ammo being just metal balls or items of similar shape (chain shot are 2 balls connected with a chain and grapes are musket balls pressed together, in the size of a ball), so nothing inherently dangerous, ships of that time had plenty of ammo stored.

That brings up a thought: are powder chambers already simulated? you know, hit a ship in its powder chamber and boom!

Also, if the weight of the cannon and ammo influences the ship we might be tempted to not fill the stores up to the brim for better sailing charakteristics. Tactical and strategic decisions all over the place! :D

Well the more shot you carry, the more powder you need to carry as well :P

 

You can get hits to your magazine currently, but as far as I know it doesn't result in an explosion yet.

 

Yeah I would like the weight system as it'll give you more choice. A brig makes a fine trader once you take out a gundeck and have a smaller crew. That weight and room can be made for cargo.

 

On the otherside of the spectrum a ship used for piracy might swap out guns for lighter cannons and carry less heavy shot because you'll want better sailing characteristics and lighter guns to take out the crew without sinking prizes.

Ships' loadouts currently affect their performance in a somewhat historical way.  I have been requesting that that performance decrease be emphasized in some way since right now it is miniscule, mainly in adding "top hamper" through more heel, and less stability in the water (rolling, pitching, etc) as all of that extra weight of metal raises the metacentric height of the vessel.

wasn't chainshot rarelly used? i read somewhere that chain links could damage the gun barrel during movement out.. instead, ships used bar shots with fixed rod between halfshots, so there was no chance of link getting between barrel and the shot.
