So, I noticed this ship on the website:

Any idea what it is? It isn't the Surprise, Trincomalee, or Constitution. I presume it's from a very old build, but I'm curious.

LOL  i looked at this and said (before reading what you wrote at the bottom) Ah looks like a trinco or a connie or maybe a surprise...... :P your guess seems legit lol

I believe that is the "Frigate". It was pulled for retooling and should be coming back eventually.

Fair enough. Btw, I just noticed that if you scroll down to the "Beautiful ships" section of the main webpage, there's a nice profile picture of this ship. She's got 13 gun ports per side on her gun deck, and 6 more gun positions per side in the forecastle and quarterdeck, so presumably she's a 38-gunner. Like the Surprise, then, but maybe a bit prettier. Nifty.

It's much better looking, I mean not because its wearing a Spanish flag... (Actually, it does make it look much better), but also  that figurehead and those colors...

Hell, maybe they can get rid of the Surprise (since its history is confusing (where is that "Fifty Shades of Frigate" thread?) and a lot of the reason it exists is just as a nod to Master and Commander) and put this frigate in instead.

Whatever it is the flag, I assume for Spain, looks fantastic.

Its a Spanish flag, you, my good sir.

+1

pre 1785 Spanish flag with a rare royal purple background, normally the background was white for naval ensign or red for the crown.

I hope they put the post 1785 bicolor flag is much more colorful and more iconic due to Trafalgar Battle. Also it has really cool merchant flag.

So the Surprise in-game really is just a tribute to the ship from the movie?

No, it's a replica of the 1794 French corvette L'Unite, with the sailplan, upper works and decorations of the ship from the movie.

So, visually, it is (at least to some extent) a tribute to the ship from the movie. Which means that it can bugger right off for all I care, and a more fitting ship can take its place. I dunno, the idea of a movie-tribute-ship kinda rubs me the wrong way in a game like this. Maybe it could be a special premium ship in the final game, or something like that.

I know, I know, there are a lot of Master and Commander fans here, and I'm probably making them all mad, but I only saw that movie once, a long time ago, and before I was very interested in that time period, so I don't have the love for that movie that many others here do. I'm not saying I disliked it or hated it, mind you, nothing like that, I'm just saying that I have a viewpoint that's different from that of many other people here.

Surprise is a visual tribute to the movie for sure, but more importantly she's a tribute to the Aubrey/Maturin series (a wonderful series to read for anyone interested in the time period, Naval history, nature, exploration, period medicine, spy novels, good literature...).  Additionally, she is based on the historic frigate, and as with many of these ships, we don't really know their appearance during their entire history.  Paint, for example, could be and was changed (I've read lengthy debates between modelers about what color to paint USS Constitution for a given time period, and she is extant!).  Rigging could be modified or completely altered (the Lady Washington was originally a sloop and later became a brig, for example).  The number of guns and gunports could be changed, and the French and British often had different compliments of guns for the same ship (as L'Unite/Surprise is a great example of).  Lastly, she represents both a French and English ship, thus can be given to both nations in the game (if ships are being restricted to initial build in a given nation) without any historians complaining too loudly.

As for the frigate in the OP, I hope to sail her soon in the open world tests!

Different viewpoint? You mean a bizarre, irrational hostility, of the sort often affected by people on the internet who want to puff themselves up as brash individualists for holding unpopular, inflammatory opinions?

Perhaps you would like Surprise replaced with a frigate named HMS Under-Bridge. You would be perfect in command.

The "movie tribute ship" was built as HMS Rose, a faithful replica of the eponymous Royal Navy frigate that served in War of American Independence. Upon being purchased for the film she underwent a refit to give her a more modern rig (such as a larger mizzen mast), plus paint, decorations, stern/quarter galleries and quarterdeck bulwarks appropriate for a Napoleonic vessel. And she remained arguably the most excellent large sailing warship replica afloat, alongside the likes of Gotheborg, Standart, and now L'Hermione. Because after all, Patrick O'Brian wrote some of the most well-researched historical fiction in print.

As I stated, the in-game ship has the hull of the historical frigate L'Unite/Surprise, making her far more authentic than, say, the brig, which is based on no particular vessel. Should the brig also be excised from the game with prejudice? Or is that not worth it because we can't get any fanboys riled up by suggesting it?

This does remind me that Patrick O'Brian visited the ship once when she was still HMS Rose and commented even before the rebuild that she was very close to his image of HMS Surprise.  Of course, as mentioned by Maturin, the Rose was a frigate of a few decades earlier, so these fairly major changes were made (they are much more than just cosmetic differences) in order to create HMS Surpise, a slightly fictionalized (mainly because she is in a fictional series) version of the original HMS Surprise.

I'm not quite sure what your issue is.  It's a real frigate (L'Unite) with a few cosmetic changes.  While arguments can be made that her armament in game is far too heavy, she is a real ship, with a real background.

I will remind everyone in the thread to please keep it respectful.

^this.

I once asked that question to the devs directly. The answer: shes made up. For testing as Mirones said above.

When we were in very early alpha we could sail her. We only had few vessels but she was a highlight.

Some time ago (months) devs said she may be reworked and brought back into the test.

As you imagine the tech requirements changed and she looks rather dull compared to the high quality models of today's ships.
