So, i was playing a game and since i was taking in alot of water (I was sinking rapidly).

As a last ditch effort i decided to ram the enemy Trincomalee (I was in a Cerberus), and i managed to sink him with it.

Needless to say he started cussing at me and here i come to my question.

Do you guys belive it is rude to try to sink the enemy in a ram if you are sinking fast anyway and wont be able to get another salvo out?

By any means necessary. That's what I say. It maybe isn't the most glorius choice but if it means one more enemy down at the price of your honour, so be it.

My thought on this is that the other guy has the option of turning out of the way (sometimes).  If they do have the option, then a ram is fair play.  If they don't, it's still a valid tactic but the other guy's probably not going to appreciate it...

I don't get why would people get mad about these things. This is war. Never once in my life I even thought about flaming when an enemy vic capsizes and completely squashes my snow in one collision. If you get into a situation where somebody can ram you to death, that's your own fault.

Why am I not surprised Eyeless Camper :P

This tactic is similar to running your fighter plane against a bombers tail when you know you're going down. It's viable and it's happened in real life.

TDM (team death match), ram 'em.

Loss mechanics are believed to be in the works to make this tactic undesirable upon release. But until then... Sail it like you stole it.

After you've rammed them, and you're going down fast, try grappling to pull them under with you!  That will really piss 'em off!

Historically, it would depend on the situation.  In a small ship match, or frigate duel where it's essentially 1 on 1, it would likely not happen.  You would strike your colors and hope that the enemy would pick you up as prisoners to one day be traded and live to sail again.  In a large fleet battle, where your sacrifice might be the difference between winning and losing, maybe.  Besides sending fire ships in to a fleet/harbor, I can't recall a case where ramming was actually done historically during this time period, except with the intent of boarding.  Of course, the Greeks and Romans did, but that's a bit OOP.

That said, in this game it does seem to be a legitimate tactic if not overused (I did have a Cereb sink my Vic once by ramming 3 times while I was being engaged by another Vic, which seems a bit of an abuse).  I would love to see extra damage given to the ramming vessel besides losing their bow sprit and sustaining minor damage to the hull.  It might discourage the more active rammers.  Last ditch?  Go ahead.  There's a good chance that your ship is so full of water at that point that unless I've got a similar amount of damage, I should be able to avoid or minimize a collision.

My personal belief is that ramming is currently not implemented very realistically.  I think too much damage is done to a larger ship when rammed by a smaller ship, and that the smaller ship often gets off too lightly (reference a Cerb ramming a Victory not once, but three times above).  I'm withholding further thoughts on ramming until DM 4.0 is implemented and some of the other tweaks mentioned by Admin in his Sea Trials Closing thread are made.  :)
