OK  Basic question please.

 

I start the game (British) and find myself in English Harbour.

 

I SAIL and find a bunch of ships moored just outside the harbour.

 

I hail these ships and find that each ship is made up of a large fleet.

 

How do I  join these fleets.? I tried sending PMs to the captains, but I get no replies.

 

I also tried hailing single ships and sending PMs in chat with the same result.

 

What am I doing wrong please?

The ships that you are seeing are NPC ships. If you hail a player it will show their rank like "Ensign Bolitho" or "Commodore Leviathan" whereas an NPC won't show a rank when you hail it. The exception is once you are in a battle instance the NPCs will have generic ranks assigned to them.

 

Every capital, English Harbour in this case, has NPC fleets that sit out in front for protection from ships of other nations. You can't join them while they sit there but if they would attack a passing player, or a player attacks them, you can click on the battle instance and join it to fight with them.

I did send pm chat messages to  real players as well. I suppose they just didn't bother to reply.

Not everyone responds to PM's and it's possible they didn't see it right away. You might try Nation chat as well to start a conversation and meet up with other players.

I seem to be progressing vey slowly as far as experience is concerned.

Fight bigger ship than your own is a good way.
