Aragorn Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Just a few suggestions for graphics that would be nice for higher end pc's that could handle it. 1) show cannons destroyed when they are unusable...right now it just looks like a chipped piece of wood if the barrel got hit. Show the barrel dismounted or the carriage destroyed. 2) when rigging is damaged show pieces of rigging hanging 3) when a mast is damaged have put in the option to see spars and whatnot hanging as it did happen frequently in naval battles if a spar was destroyed it could dangle in the rigging until it was cut away. Same with masts, the mast could fall into the water but still be attached to the ship through the rigging and drag the ship or damage it. 4) show more crew members on deck Anyother suggestions/thoughts? 4

Based on devs response, most of the items like moving guns, crew, smoke is killing FPS big time. Your suggestions probably will have a performance impact as well. To me it seems the Engine that they are using for NA is not capable of holding these things, but I could be wrong.
Henry d'Esterre Darby Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Replacing a cannon model with a destroyed cannon model wouldn't do much of anything to FPS or performance. You're just replacing an object with a different object - much the way the sails start to show rips when the sail condition drops below 100%. Damaged Spars are a little harder since they interact with the entire rigging model, including stays/braces/etc.

While good suggestions they are kind of unrealistic if you want them to look exceedingly good. Not only is the focus of the devs not on beauty right now but on actually building a game, the requests you make would be demanding in a single player game let alone a multiplayer game with battles of up to 30v30. It would be the same rinse and repeat animations. And you would need models for each etc, you can't just have a cannon instantly turn into a broken cannon without a animation without it seeming cheap and ugly, the same goes for spars falling or rigging or sails hanging down. Imagine 5 first rates Fire at 5 enemy first rates and vice versa, your game now has to be told by the server "hey, that ship lost 10 guns, that one now has rigging hanging, that one has spars here and this there." Etc and then your game has to render the changes all at the same time (or it would look quite goofy) while keeping up with smoke, waves, crew animations, etc. Now scale this up to a larger fight and realize your pc is not going to handle it very well. The issue then comes up as why bother doing this if only one person in the world can run it like this not to mention the extremely large amount of work needed. The tldr is everything is possible, but that doesn't mean it will run well or even at all. You could render all 700 crew of a first rate ship with good texture work and animations, at about 1fps until your computer catches fire or blue screens due to memory issues everywhere. Same goes for detailed price by peice destruction of ships.
Jack Freedom Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 I like your suggestions Aragorn but maybe they could start looking into adding these later down the road once the basic mechanics of the game are more complete.
MaecJoker Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 I also like the point to see more crew on the ships, maybe at least 1 member per guna and a Captain around the steering wheel would be a small but great start, and it wouldn't affect the fps that much 1
Principe Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 Yup, add a captain at least and I'll be happy in the long run and a sailor for each cannon would be great and if you wanna impress all of us, do it like Empire Total War Every post has a sailor and several soldiers
D. Federico de Gravina y N Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 I prefer, moving guns when they are shooting. 1
MaecJoker Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 I prefer, moving guns when they are shooting. Well, that's also something I want, but in my opinion, adding more crew brings a better feeling at the moment then moving guns (which I hope will be implemented later)
