Yes after they sink you, they usually leave.... Glut glug glug :)

In all seriousness, while not I'm not in the game as yet, try YouTube for advice. ramjb has an excellent video called "Naval action - shaking a guy off you six". He bluffs with sails and reduces speed to force them close and over shoot the turn.

thanks...

Just a heads up I do not own the game and I have only watched about 10 hours or so of in game footage and have to say I'm impressed so far so my comments are based on what I've watched only.

Having read the frustration and concerns of the guy on the previous page feeling aggrieved about being stern camped...

Flipping the coin over here and thinking about it from the other persons prospective, I'd be inclined to try and do the same if I felt that the ship I was hounding would blow me out of the water. It comes down to the individual player managing his area of awareness, meaning if like many players I have watched who do the same in other game videos they get tunnel vision and will not keep an eye on their surrounding, (greed factor) then in my opinion getting stern camped is your own fault for not responding to this issue well in advance. Where I come from prevention is better that cure!

I have no sympathy for players who can not plan, it tells me they lack certain skills and need to address their actions not the other way round. So always use your mini map and make sure you keep an eye on smaller vessels biting as they hurt real bad over time and once they are close there is virtually no chance of moving them from that position, unless you get an opportunity to board them but that's probably never going to happen. Kudos for the player being able to get that close and get in that position, because if you think about it had the other player addressed him earlier he would of got double barrel in the mush for sure and chances are even with repair kits he would be done.

So to summarize manage treats to have more fun and learn the strengths and weaknesses of your current vessel and if you cannot manage that then expect poor results.

Bigger does not always mean better either.

Remember you are not using modern ship or tanks here these are wooden blocks designed for life on water but water is not anyone friend so each ship design has it's pluses and minuses too. Learn them and win more.

One thing this post has enlightened me to is the fact that how important it is to start shooting players sails down before they even get close to you, yeah it's a real blast shooting at the hull and watching bits of 4 by 2 flying everywhere but getting shots on that bow sail and shooting at a certain sail will have far better results with regards to handling imo. The only down side I see with this game at the moment is the unrealistic repair kits...I get why they in, but they should not be able to repair sails as fast as they do and you should have to disengage to use them too I feel that would be a better mechanic, because we don't have the manpower to do this is battle it's a past time after fights so you should pull away to use them in game. I would prefer to see just one repair kit this way it will make people rethink and not gung ho all the time. I've heard many people in their youtube videos saying oh it's okay I still have three repair kits so lets try this...There is no fear factor on your bad decisions.

Hope I've not offended anyone with my sharp but honest comments as that was not my intention at all, even though my forum name may suggest that.

while the videos are useful, i think you need to play the game to properly inform your opinion. My first post above was before I played the game and while the video will help a bit, as Prater said, against the better players, your basically doomed. Yes, learning to sail is required in this game (and it's pretty unforgiving learning curve), but some ships just can't win against others, even with the most skillful player sailing them. Team work, tactics, target selection and focus fire are way more important than shooting sails.

Repair kits are fine as three. If you are the lead ship it gives you a chance to recover a bit when focused rather than disconnect or spectator. I'm a bit confused how to disengage when your sails are knackered and you stern camped by a smaller ship. Can you elaborate how to do this?

I think you will be quite surprised.  I've seen some pretty crazy victories from other people that shouldn't be possible.  I remember one game where a Snow sank a Victory and got like 13-14k damage.  I've seen a Privateer sink a Bellona and get like 9k damage.

I have seen chaos reeked in small ships too. I wasn't clear in my post above, it's big ships that currently don't win a stern camp situation. A well sailed snow, in my opinion and experience, will always beat a victory one on one given enough time if they can get behind the large ship with sails intact. I honestly don't think player skill in the larger ship really comes into it, as it's about accereration, deceleration, turning speed. I'm not saying small ships are OP, but you do need escorts when sailing big ships.

In RL a rated ship would usually have an allotment of Marines, 1st rates could carry 200 at some points (though the ratio is listed as 1 marine for every 7 sailors but I'm not sure this was written in stone) These Marines would make it impossible for any small ship to camp close to a large ship as the small ships deck would get raked by fire and make it impossible to operate the sails or load top guns.

Plus, a large ship would have plenty of swivel guns on board. These were mobile, and could be emplaced on the poop if necessary. Then the camper would suffer plunging fire of a considerably greater caliber than mere muskets.

For a more extreme example:

In an extended chase situation where broadside guns couldn't be brought to bear, some SoLs even mounted additional guns in the stern.

After Cornwallis' Retreat (look it up), several of the British ships had to have their stern structures rebuilt because the crew relocated so many guns there. By the time you could disable an SoL in a snow, they would have as many guns poking out of the stern windows as you had on your broadside.

The number is 1 for every cannon.  Most 1st rates had 100, not 200.  That doesn't include officers though.

As Prater says around one marine per gun. Unrated ships like HMS bounty didn't carry marines, which was a likely factor to the mutiny. it's also worth noting, in the RN, 'marines' could be army infantry soldiers or cavalry troopers. Several regiments on both sides fought at both Waterloo and trafalgar.

This entire post is definitely from someone who has not played in Sea Trials.  No offense meant.

It is very easy for a small ship to get behind a larger one.  Just point the bow at ship and sail right at it.  Right before you ram turn and get behind.  No savvy sailing.  No skill required.  At most a few cannon balls damage, but nothing to worry about.

The larger ship trying to shoot the smaller is again something you have to experience.  Currently, you have no control which cannon will fire making many single shots miss since you aren't sure where to aim. (the devs posted about more control in the future)  Maybe 10% - 30% of a broadside will hit as most is wasted hitting waves.  The smaller ship is not concerned knowing larger ones can't really hurt it.  Players know how hard it is for larger to hit smaller which is why an experienced player can sail a smaller ship against a larger effectively, and unfortunately so easily.  When you get the game and try it you'll understand.

This is common in Sea Trials.  How often at the beginning of a battle did a yacht or privateer immediately leave his line and sail straight for the rear of the enemies line?  All alone?  No fear?

I have seen a single broadside from a privateer kill 200 crew on a SOL against one of the best players in the game.  I sacrificed my Constitution to clear his stern while taking broadsides from their SOL thinking what a ridiculous trade and reversal of roles as the SOL supports the privateer.

For fun, here is the some chat log of last night's four ship battle with a new player first witnessing a good camp.  My Trinc vs. Snow, Navy Brig and Privateer.  I replaced their names out of courtesy.  The Snow and Brig are sunk and I am now dealing with the perpetual camper:

Yes, damn those silly light ships not broadside to broadside trading with your Santi and actually playing to their strengths. It must be horrible to realize that Santisima is not the universal automatic I-win-all crutch after all that ''grind''.

Stern camping with grape is probably a bit OP at the moment, imo.  Capital ships should have some form of secondary fire that makes getting close a rather painful affair for open decked ships.  You should definitely still be able to zip in and unload a broadside and get away but close camping a stern forever is something that probably shouldn't happen without risking losing your crew as well.

Maybe have the secondary fire limited to somewhere around double or nade range so you could still stand off on the stern a bit and camp.

Never said that and wouldn't that be going the opposite extreme?  I ask for balance.
