I am looking forward to 4.0 and the much more precise damage model.

We should check ourselves ahead of it though. We are playing an ALPHA and it has been great fun to date, sound, visuals and the weight of combat along with the different feels of each of the ships I think have won many a fan over.

We have however been playing with a very much 'Hitpoints' based model, where a heavily damaged ship is still very useful and can deal alot of damage despite being 80% sunk.

With the new model, I expect the damage to cause ships to become alot less useful as they take damage, losing guns, manoeuvrability and crew.....this will feel terrible for many of us who have been booming away....but it is (assuming the balance is well done) as it should be.

You take a point blank broadside from a big bad ship.....expect to be weaker.

You will get some RNG where you boom or burn.....

Looking forward to it....

When is 4.0 coming out? Where do you find this information for future reference?

It was in a week or two, last time I read that (few days ago).

The hardest part for people to adapt to will be the effect on angled shots. There will be lots of bouncers and lighter damage coming our way on some firing solutions.

yeah it was posted to facebook a few days ago that testing for 4.0 will be finalised in a week or two

This will most definitely make larger ships with more guns vastly more dangerous. Expect more SOL's on the horizon. I really hope they give frigates a reason to fight

On the other hand, it might actually make it easier for Frigates to significant damage to SoLs even at greater ranges. Any shot that managed to find an open port is going to wreck merry hell on the internals of that SoL.

Assuming that frigate gets more shots off before that 3rd, 2nd, or 1st rate turns and fires. 50 batteries going off at once will wreck more havoc than the 10 - 20 from a frigate.

Time will tell

Well, in major naval engagements the frigates job is to repeat signals and stay out of the way, not to fight sol.

I dont think the current sea trial trend of a few sol supported by a group of frigates is really that realistic.

Frigates could certainly have various techniques to try and hurt a sol, but those strike me as more something a group of frigates who happen upon a lone 3rd or 4th rate may adopt if they feel like the situation is to their favor, not something for an actual battle, and still probably not a good idea.

While a lynx stern camping a victory makes for a good video, it doesnt strike me as terribly authentic.

In real life, those stern chasers on the Victory would make matchsticks out of the Lynx.  Barring that, a boat or two with boarding parties by the Victory would easily overwhelm the Lynx's crew.  However, this is a game and perfect authenticity isn't possible.  Heck, even in real life perfect authenticity isn't possible these days.  Nearly all operational tall ships have engines, the crews are much smaller, the food is better, the safety concerns are much higher, and the captain's ultimate control is much less.  The upside is that far fewer people die!
