admin Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 What is the maximum yard angle to hull possible on a square rigged ship (modern or old?)
van stiermarken Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 I can only guess, because the question is not in a correct nautical term/language. But it is between 50 to 70 degrees, depending on wind (true and apparent) speed and ship type (full rigged etc.)
DeRuyter Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I know this is a necro but I have just returned to the new forum. How far yards could be braced on a square-rigged ship was limited by the shrouds. John Harland's "Seamanship in the Age of Sail" has a great illustration of this problem. I don't have my copy at hand, but 60 degrees is usually quoted as the limit.
