How does aiming work?

Frequently my ship just lose aiming (range found) even tho both the enemy ship and mine are going in straight line. 

How does aiming work? And why do I constantly lose it?

Your gunners are  taking a tea time break if they are british ..

Don't quote me, but it seems to be a factor of getting regular hits. Once you go X minutes without a hit, the firing solution starts degrading.

Pretty sure this is it.  With guns that have extremely long reloads, I notice that the targeting solutions reset before the next salvo.  12” with +10% length I notice the most with as I use that caliber the most.  Followed by larger caliber guns like 14” and above.
