anyone know what battle these show up for the Union? any tips on where they set up so they can be targeted and hopefully a few captured?

If you mean when the union fields them when you play as the CSA then it really depends on difficulty. But probably sometime around Fredericksburg on legendary you'll start seeing some.

There is also a unit that usually has them at the battle of Manassas Depot. NY heavy artillery or something like that is the name. I always try and capture that one.

is it located to the left of the first fort/depot or further on the back right after the 2nd objective?

found them attacked with 1 skirm and Calvary at end of battle. artillery unit after a lenghty fight evaporated. 3 guns captured. is there a way to capture more? I know its a small unit anyway

If you're running a mod that fixes it, then actually capturing them will yield a few more. Otherwise killing them all is as good as it gets.

is 3 about the right number? how many have u captured?

It depends on difficulty and the size of the enemy unit. Colonel: 30%, BG: 20%, MG/Legendary: 10%
