Abreast formation not working?

I am not sure if someone else had this issue: Whether I order "ahead" or "abreast" my pre-dreadnought BBs form a column. I spent an hour trying to coax them to line side-by side without success. What could be the problem?

The game does not do a real line abreast. Second, third etc. Ship will move left/right and some shiplenght behind the lead. Looks more like a arrowhead with the leadship at the point.
