before I start with my suggestion credit to the individual who commented on the roadmap requesting the ability to change caliber by a tenth of an inch for the ship designer because I feel like that could be and should be implemented and it caused me to think of this suggestion.

 

 Something akin to a mix of the torpedo system and armor thickness could work where you choose your model of gun amount of barrels single, double, triple or quad and then in a menu akin to the armor system where you would have a min and max value for your prospective mounts with said values affecting weight, size, reload time, cost, accuracy similar to the torpedo models allowing for some gun mountings on hardpoints that were previously not allowed or that looked uncanny. Now I realize this would turn into a spreadsheet looking nightmare and the issue of having the same gun mount but of differing caliber would be a pain however I feel like it could be circumvented by having the menu pop of when you click that mount or hover over a mini menu would pop up for that mount and the any mount mirroring it in the case of guns offset from the centerline.
 

If anyone has addon suggestions please do mention them or anything related to this

Using the left side points like for torpedoes could be a bit problematic, since you can have multiple different kinds of both primary and secondary guns.

But considering how in the designer itself (the middle part where you place down bits directly) there is a way to only allow certain items to go to specific spots, I think it would be possible to plop down the turret type you want and then put in the guns as a seperate step.

Either way I am very much in favour of this. Especially with how some turrets become bigger with higher tiers, like the 305 or 330 that go from round to elongated designs.

I am also, for instance we know that The German Pre Dreadnaughts where refitted and given upgraded 12in rifles, but the turrets look the same, The US also replaced the 12 and 14in guns in their dreadnaughts with upgraded marks and improved elevation but leaving the turret looking the same.

A lot to do, but I could work with this idea. I personally want more freedom in what turret I place- gun shields should be optional, turret armour should be optional with the armour setting being at zero literally stripping them bare so they can fit in new and interesting places, and turret types should also be an option. I'd also like to choose armour layout on a per-turret basis. If I want a British-looking German ship, that's my prerogative as supreme leader of the navy (seeing as the game combines the duties of the navy's admiralty with those of their design boards and in some cases civilian governments to release funds for warship construction).

 

The exact manner of implementation is semi-irrelevant to me so long as it's fairly usable by newcomers to keep sales high (and thus patches happening).
