Definitely for attack and even for defence by stationing ship into regions. RTW2 you are given a selection of ships by the battle generator, you can’t choose from that region list, it’s fixed! that sucks big time. Sure randomness might appeal to some but not me, I prefer to have total control, total command. At this stage (pre campaign) I’m thinking my fleets will be made up of a mix of designs, specialized ships or purposed built ships, of the same class, e.g. destroyers as torpedo specialist, destroyers as gun boats, cruisers for defence, cruisers for attack, cruisers for screening, etc. Definitely won't be designing just one only of each class. The only way this could be possible is if I was assured of ship selection. Because auto-generated selections couldn’t include specialized ships. Most likely the battle generator would only choose ships by class only. Suggestion. After a battle has been spawned and a total of 'possible available ships is generated' (the randomness part), then a ‘Player Ship Selection Screen’ opens and the player selects which ships to actually add to battle. Exactly like UAAoS ship selection screen... This should give the player their ‘emotion’ of being in command, as an admiral. Which IMO is very important to any wargaming genre. PS, I do realize that the battle generator would have to be adjusted to widen the scope of ships for selection but it's got to be worth it. To me, I really have nothing to say besides it's of those ideas that are not hard to implement, are a massive QoL improvement, and have nothing against it, so why not? 2
Scorpion Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Hi there! First of all, I would like to confess I do not own UA:D. My only exposure to the game comes form these forums and Stealth17's gameplay videos. Having said that, I have a few ideas that I think would improve the random battle generator. If I understand Skesis' post correctly, he mainly focused on selecting previouslt designed ships from saves to fill out the fleet. I also like your idea to have divisions customised in the battle set up screen rather than during battle, it would cut off much confusion from the starting minutes of the battle. The only thing I would add is a separate overhead map where you could physically place your available ships in the formation you want them to be in. Besides this, I would add a fleet or ship-class "budget", either in terms of tons of displacement or building cost. That way, you can have more control over battles where the enemy fleet is A.I.-generated. For instance, imagine a random battle generator where, besides the nation and starting year, you can select the maximum tonnage (or cost) of the fleets participating. Or, after the number of ships in each class, you can select the maximum tonnage (or cost) of each ship in the class. Or both! What do you guys think?
